Tiivistelmä. Diplomityö Kuopion kasarmialueen ympäristön suunnittelun lähtökohdat ja kehitysperiaatteet on konseptitasoinen suunnitelma ja tutkimus, kuinka alueella havaitut historialliset arvot voidaan huomioida suunnittelussa. Työ jakautuu karkeasti neljään osaan. Ensimmäinen osa esittelee alueen taustatiedot, kuten alueen historian, sekä rakentumisen vaiheet ja toinen osa nykyisen kaavoitus- ja suojelutilanteen. Kolmanteen osioon sisältyy kaupunkikuva-analyysi ja alueen mitoituksen tarkastelua. Taustatietojen perusteella muodostuu käsitys alueen arvoista, jotka ohjaavat suunnittelua. Viimeinen osio esittelee kehitysperiaatteet, joilla alueella tunnistetut arvot voidaan turvata jatkosuunnittelussa. Periaatteet koostetaan konseptitasoiseksi yleissuunnitelmaksi.Development principles of Kuopio barracks area. Abstract. The Master’s thesis Development principles of Kuopio barracks area is a conceptual plan and research of how the historical values of the area can be considered in area planning. This thesis is divided up into four sections. The first section is about the history of the area and phases of construction. The second section introduces the current state of zoning and building protection. The third section consists of the cityscape analysis and observation of the area’s measurements. This background research adduces both historical and current values in the area. Last section introduces development principles how the observed values can be secured in further planning. The principles are also examined in a conceptual master plan
