On June 18, 2012, in Washington, D.C., the Jefferson Awards began a one-year celebration of our 40th Anniversary. Hollywood producer, Rupert Hitzig, created a two-hour spectacular in Constitution Hall. Lesley Stahl served as emcee. Beside our grassroots "Unsung Heroes," our outstanding high schools and our GLOBECHANGERS, our 2012 national winners included: General David Petraeus, Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis for rebuilding New Orleans after Katrina, and professional athletes giving back - NFL quarterback Jim Kelly, NHL Patrick LaF ontaine and Indy Racing League driver, Charlie Kimball. Tony Award winner, Faith Prince, and actor-singer Jason Graae performed along with Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis and the 100-person Alexandria Harmonizers. MEASURABLE RESULTS From our beginning in 19 7 2, more than 50,000 grassroots "Unsung Heroes, " employees in the workplace and young Americans have won Jefferson Awards. SIA is driven by student leaders who manage seven monthly deliverables - all designed to train the leaders in lifelong skills and to multiply volunteering in high schools. Learn leadership by doing, combined with 24-hours of classroom leadership training. MEASURABLE RESULTS • 325 high schools in 16 communities • Trained 6,865 student leaders • Schools report 5.2 million volunteer hours • Rated value by Independent Sector at $109 million Central Florida Leadership Conference VOUth SERVICE CHALLENGE Cape Henlopen High School JROTC and Lewes, DE Mayor James Ford Youth Service Challenge's Million Meal Marathon Youth Service Challenge 's New Website In 2010, the Jefferson Awards began working with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to shine a positive spotlight on student-led service activities, with the goal of making service a year-round commitment. Great efforts were spent in 2012 updating the Youth Service Challenge website to make posting projects easy and accessible. The most outstanding Youth Service Challenge project took place in Indianapolis with Mayor Greg Ballard, Kids Against Hunger, the Indianapolis Public Schools, the Indianapolis Colts, and our Jefferson Awards Media Partner - Larry Blackerby, and ABC's RTV6. More than 895,000 meals were packed and shipped around the United States and the world to needy children. GLOBECHANGERS trains young Americans, 25 and under, to THINK BIG and develop a "YES, I CAN" attitude. We work with them to take their BIG IDEAS to CHANGE THE WORLD and tum the ideas into national or global service projects. 2012 was a transformational year for GLOBECHANGERS. We now have 37 GLOBECHANGERS in our system, matched with mentors, and a team managing the program. During 2012, we created top-of-the-line GLOBECHANGER training materials including 32 documents and 12-case studies (180 pages.) We also updated our website to make it interactive, and to allow each student to create their own website, Face book page, and Twitter accounts for their projects. The focus of Champions is to make community building a central and strategic bottom line commitment by CEOs and corporations. Robust volunteer programming strengthens employee leadership and communication skills, builds teamwork and serves as a central recruitment tool competing for the best upcoming young talent. The Jefferson Awards has 23 Champions that include: Allstate, Nationwide, Heinz, Deloitte, National Grid, Aramark, PG & E, Highmark, Prudential, AstraZeneca and Exelon. In 2012, the Jefferson Awards completely revamped our Champions program to increase the services we offer corporations and to create multiple entry levels. Robert C Provost Director of Marketing The Star-ledger The overall goal is to institutionalize the Jefferson Awards and make it a lasting national organization beyond the founder, Sam Beard. Our first step was to create a strong 12-member Board of Governors, chaired by Joe Sanberg. The Board of Governors is active and plays the lead management and governance role. Our second step was to enlist Frank McIntosh to serve as Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. For 30 years, Frank spearheaded Junior Achievement in Delaware. His strengths are building teams and collaboration as well as creating boards, fundraising, and working with corporations.
