This paper deals with the elegy as a lyrical expression of the feelings and emotions aroused by the loss of a friend. The analysis in this paper focuses on the translation of Walt Whitman's poem, «O Captain! My Captain!» and the different approaches to the text, with the purpose of showing how much the linguistic and non-linguistic context (historical, situational, socio cultural, etc) can be negotiated in order to achieve a better pedagogical result.Este trabajo trata de la elegía como expresión lírica de los sentimientos y emociones que surgen ante la pérdida de un amigo. El análisis que se presenta en este trabajo se centra en la traducción del poema «O Captain! My Captain!» de Walt Whitman y en los distintos acercamientos al texto, con el propósito de mostrar como los contextos lingüísticos y no lingüísticos (tales como el histórico, el situacional, el sociocultural, etc.) se pueden interrelacionar para obtener un resultado pedagógico mejor
