Knowledge about Homosexuality Questionnaire (KHQ) (Corrêa-ribeiro, Iglesias, & Camargos,
2018) e Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale (ATLG) (Cárdenas & Barrientos, 2008).
No
Adicionalmente, verificouse que quanto maior for o conhecimento menores serão as atitudes negativas. The following dissertation is part of the 2nd Year Masters in Clinical Psychology Health. It is
comprised of an article, a theoretical attachment and a general argument. Its main
objectives are to evaluate and compare knowledge and attitudes of both youngsters and
elders, relatively to the elders’ sexuality, and homosexuality (lesbians and gays) exploring
matters which may be taboo for the society and that are associated with prejudice and
stigma. It also shows whether there are differences in knowledge and attitude regarding
gender, if the subject identifies with any specific religion and depending on their level of
education. It is also intended to observe if there is a correlation between the attitudes and
knowledge about the sexuality of the elderly and homosexuality.
Sexuality is fundamental to the Human being, following its manifestations through all phases
of life, manifesting itself in different ways, whether during teenage years or at old age
(Guacira, 2000). It is related to pleasure and well-being, therefore, being essential to human
life (Francis & Vieira, 2013).
This study is transversal, of quantity nature, descriptive, inferential and correlation type. The
sample was obtained by convenience, through the elaboration of a protocol for the effect, in
paper format. 167 subjects participated, divided into two age groups, teenagers (n=97) from
18 to 25 years old, and elderly (n=70) over the age of 65. The tools used were a demographic
questionnaire to characterise the sample, the translated scale for the Portuguese population
Aging Sexual Knowledge and Attitudes Scale (ASKAS) (Senra, 2013) proceeding with the
translation of the scales Knowledge about Homosexuality Questionnaire (KHQ) (Corrêaribeiro, Iglesias, & Camargos, 2018) and Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale (ATLG)
(Cárdenas & Barrientos, 2008).
In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that the youngsters are more open-minded
towards sexuality at old age as well as homosexuality, compared to the elderly. When it
comes to knowledge, it was evident that there are no differences between both age groups
regarding sexuality at old age, although teenagers know more about homosexuality. In
addition, it was possible to notice that the greater the knowledge, the less are the negative
attitudes
