Na primeira metade dos anos de 2000, Cabo Verde, mais especificamente a sua capital, Praia, deparou-se com um novo tipo de conflito urbano. Os “thugs”, uma figura social emergente, e os deportados provenientes dos Estados Unidos da América, foram apontados como os principais responsáveis. A resposta governamental foi musculada e repressiva, sem que no entanto fizesse baixar a percepção de insegurança, visto que as execuções sumárias e tiroteios entre os grupos rivais continuaram. A partir da revisão de literatura sobre o estudo dos gangues de rua, busca-se neste paper evidenciar a pertinência das reformulações teóricas no estudo da criminalidade urbana, na análise dos gangues de rua em Cabo Verde.In the first half of the year 2000, Cape Verde, more specifically its capital, Praia, was
faced with a new kind of urban conflict. The "thugs", an emerging social figure, and the
