Weeds are  the principal  bio(c  constrain  to  rice  produc(on and theoccurrence of herbicide resistant popula(ons has made more di/cult their control. The study aimedat  evalua(ng  the  e-ect  of  salinity  on  seed  germina(on  and  seedling  growth  of  rice  and  somebarnyardgrass (Echinochloa spp.) and weedy rice popula(ons (Oryza sa/va), collected in Italian rice0elds, resistant and sensi(ve to ALS-inhibitor herbicides. Seed germina(on tests were conducted inPetri dishes under nine di-erent salt concentra(ons from 0 to 400 mM NaCl. E-ect of salinity onemergence and seedling growth of weeds and rice were evaluated in greenhouse by growing plantsin alveolar trays with a saline solu(on at concentra(ons ranging from 0 and 250 mM. The e-ect onweeds of the possible interac(on between salinity and herbicide treatment (with penoxsulam andimazamox applied at 0eld rate) was also tested. Germina(on and plant growth of herbicide resistantrice and weeds were generally more a-ected by salinity as resistant weedy rice and the resistantvariety CL80 showed 98% and 96% germina(on reduc(on, respec(vely. The species less a-ected bysalt  was  the  sensi(ve  rice  variety  Baldo  that  only  showed  a  57%  of  germina(on  reduc(on.Barnyardgrass  growth was  generally  less  a-ected by  salt  presence than the other  species,  whileweedy rice and rice were devitalized at salt concentra(on of about 100 mM. When weedy rice wastreated with imazamox, only few growth parameters were a-ected by salinity, such as plant heightand chlorophyll content. Link between salinity response and herbicide resistance was not observedfor  all  species  and  growth  parameters;  however,  weeds  tolerant  to  salt,  i.e.  barnyardgrass,  alsocharacterized by herbicide resistance, can be more problema(c in saline rice areas.Key words: salt, red rice, ALS-inhibitor herbicides, herbicide resistance.
