/ JUN-15-74 .A j~Iarker in Human Progress stl dents at public and pri-vate schools and at institutions of higher learning in the J ack-sonville area have been mak-ing new beginnings at com-mencement exercises in the past two weeks. With the graduation exercis-es for the "charter class" at the Un.iversit~9t __ North Florida, both education --ana-nuinan progress in this community passed a new milestone. While the . University of North Florida has issued certifi-cates to graduates in 1973, they were to students who had begun their upper division college work elsewhere. On Wednesday, however, the 685 graduates granted diplomas were the first, or cha,rter, class that had begun and completed their up- . per division studies at this,,the newest university in the state system of higher education. Graduations ~~e icommon at this time of the ' year and the . event at North· Florida Univer-sity was much like other such ceremonies throughout the area, and across the nation, for that matter. However, it does give us pause to reflect that J ackson-ville has passed another mile-stone in its continued growth as a community, and lts people-people from all walks of life-have a greater opportunity to grow in spirit and in mind as a \ result of the availability to them of the University of North ' Florida and the educational op- I portunities it affords. With the University of North Florida "charter class" of 1974, J a c k son viiI e, indeed , has passed another milestone to-ward human progre~s. J ) ,~
