Diegesis, language(s) and cinema: the artist, by Michel Hazanavicius

Abstract

Neste texto procuraremos analisar como é que no filme The Artist (O Artista) de Michel Hazanavicius a utilização do som serve os propósitos semióticos que o estruturam enquanto filme (aparentemente) mudo. Tentaremos evidenciar a composição da estrutura diegética e a sua relação com os valores semióticos que os elementos sonoros vão adquirindo ao longo do filme. Procuraremos, igualmente, demonstrar como, na sua globalidade, o filme se constitui uma referência simbólica à relação entre as variadas formas de linguagem que o cinema abarca e a língua, bem assim como ao longo de todo o filme se estruturam os elementos simbólicos que permitem a referida leitura global.This paper will attempt to analyze how, in the film The Artist by Michel Hazanavicius, the sound is used in order to serve its semiotic structure as an apparently silent movie. We will try to show the composition of the diegetic structure and, throughout the film, its relation to the soundtrack semiotic values. It is our aim, also, to demonstrate how the film is a symbolic reference to the relationship between pictoral and verbal languages usually the basis of every movie. We will analyze, as well, as throughout the film some symbolic elements are structured allowing an overall and coherent reading of the film as a vision of the relationship between words and images in the communicational process.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
