terceira idade e do envelhecimento activo.Nowadays, European countries (including Portugal) are facing a new context: the
population’s aging. Europe has demographic indices that show an inversion of the population
pyramid, with decreasing numbers of children and young adults, and increasing percentage of
the older population who sees its average life expectancy rising. As the retirement date
approaches, the elderly face their oldness as the final stage of their lives, in which it is not worth
investing. Those ideas may turn their lives more complex and difficult, since we know that at this
point feelings as depression, loneliness and isolation may arise. These feelings in association
with various ills which are part of the natural process of aging may affect the well-being and
quality of life of the elderly. In this sense, active aging appears as a proposal to bridge the
passive moments of life of the elderly, so that they feel good physically, mentally and socially.
The project that originated this report is part of a training curriculum for the Master in
Education – specialization in Adults’ Education and Community Intervention – in “Centro de
Solidariedade Social de S. Veríssimo” (in Barcelos), in the nursing home and day care areas.
Using qualitative and quantitative methodologies as interviews, questionnaire survey,
direct and active observation and informal conversations, the needs and interests of the forty-two
users who were the target-public of this project, were heard. These allowed concluding that the
intervention’s process would focus on the promotion of activities based on animation, adults’
literacy and civic education. Theoretical approaches and investigations, that helped to widely
understand the complexity of seniors and active aging, were also used to a better consolidation of
the basics of the project
