do processo criativo.
(1982), Umberto Eco (1976) e Jacques Durand (1973).
Since advertising´s source material is the idea, it‘s of my interest to research the
persuasion techniques used by creators with the purpose of catching attention and seduce the
audience. Taking into account the linking of two possible elements: the image and the written
message, I intend to answer the question: "how to tell a story through a steady image?".
This report emerges from a professional experience, an internship, in an advertising
agency and, therefore, it lies on a reflective exercise based on my practice as a copywriter, and in
which I will share my general perspective as a mere participant of the advertising world and also
as someone who‘s developed skills in a specific type of advertising – the press advertising.
The starting point is the agency, where I begin a reflection about the creative process.
Even though this type of ad may include linguistic dimensions, and also the important discussion
in which every element has an influence on the other, it is given special emphasis on the image
dimension. From this point, I attempt to understand how the twist occurs, the detail which makes
that commercial unforgettable.
In order to understand the modern structures and changes in the appreciation of verbal
and visual dimensions, it was necessary to walk through the historical evolution of press ads
since the beginning until nowadays, in western societies. In addition, a bibliographic revision of
the scholars who founded the rhetoric of the image, such as Roland Barthes (1982), Umberto
Eco (1976) and Jacques Durand (1973), is carried out. I intend to combine the professional
vision I acquired during my internship with the vision from these scholars, who were part of my
academic study. Thus, many contributions from authors of the advertising industry field (Ogilvy,
1985), (Young, 2003), (Sullivan, 2008), were broached, culminating with significant examples
from diverse persuasion techniques.
This report represents an attempt to contribute for a better understanding of one of the
many moments of the creative process, and not simplifying it as an instruction manual,
accounting the complex and infinite universe of creativity
