Abstract
No
The present paper reports a study on the development of the concept of conditional
probability in the 12th grade students (age 17) through the regular teaching. In this
study were involved students from five classes of the 12th grade, a total of 115
students from a Portuguese school. In the form of written test, the students answered
to several questions about conditional probability, including situations with and
without replacement and the reversal of the temporal axis, conditioning and causality
and the conjunction fallacy, before and after teaching the concept. The study results
points to a very shallow acquisition of the concept of conditional probability, before
and even after teaching the concept. In one hand, this emphasizes the counterintuitive
nature of this concept and, in the other, a limited impact of the regular
teaching in their development
