Neste
no sistema educativo português.
controlo). The key aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the National Exam of
Mathematics in the 9th schooling grade, either on the teaching practices or on the evaluation
procedures. In this regard were identified the following research questions: 1.Which are the
effects of the National Exam of Mathematics in the 9th schooling grade (external evaluation) on
the teaching practices and evaluation procedures (internal evaluation)? 2. How do the teachers
explain the potential discrepancies between external evaluation practices and the internal
evaluation ones? 3. How do the teachers analyse their students’ results in National Exam of
Mathematics in the 9th schooling grade?
Using a qualitative methodology, semi- structured interviews were held with fifteen
teachers of Mathematics, from different schools in the district of Porto. Analysing the teachers’
speech (as well as their pedagogic materials), we tried to study, a posteriori , the effects of the
introduction of the “external evaluation” on the evaluative and pedagogic practices. The study
adopted the following conceptual frameworks: the scientific literature, the Mathematics
syllabuses and the appliable laws and regulations in Portugal.
The final results showed a concrete impact of the National Exam of Mathematics,
changing the teaching and evaluation practices. This opposes the curricular, didactic and
legislative guidelines, but, on the other hand, it strengthens the collaborative and reflexive
practices and the investment in self-training. In most cases, the teachers teach and evaluate,
considering the National Exam as the prime aim (teleologic effect), as model or standard
(normative effect) and as way of surveillance and external and internal pressure (control effect)
