Este artigo estuda a teoria da consciência que foi proposta pelo médico psiquiatra português Miguel Bombarda (1851-1910). São analisados os seguintes aspectos: a consciência como um epifenómeno do cérebro, a teoria da plasticidade das conexões neuronais e a influência da teoria das emoções de James e Lange. São identificadas várias falácias de argumentação nos textos de Bombarda. É feita uma interpretação inovadora do significado do termo ‘epifenómeno’.This paper studies the theory of consciousness published by the Portuguese psychiatrist Miguel Bombarda (1851-1910). Several themes are analyzed: consciousness as an epiphenomenon of the brain, the theory of the plasticity of neuronal connections, and the influence of James’s and Lange’s theory of emotions. A number of argumentation fallacies are highlighted in the way Bombarda makes his case. It is offered a new interpretation of the meaning of the word ‘epiphenomenon’
