The properties of composites consisting of natural fibres in a polymer matrix (e.g. polypropylene, PLLA) have been studied. Different types of fibres were studied: dew- and water-retted flax, cotton, and mechanical pulp fibres. A thorough analysis of especially the surface characterstics of the fibres was carried out. The surface chemical composition was determined by the survey and high-resolution elemental XPS-spectra. Further, molecular information and the distribution of the components on the fibre surface was provided by imaging ToF-SIMS. The morphology was studied by SEM aand AFM
