Bu çalışmanın amacı, ortaokul matematik öğretmeni adaylarının sözel problemleri değişkensiz olarak çözebilme becerilerini ve problem çözme süreçlerinde kullandıkları stratejileri ve yöntemleri incelemektir. Bu doğrultuda, çalışmanın katılımcılarını, Atatürk Üniversitesi Kazım Karabekir Eğitim Fakültesi ortaokul matematik öğretmenliği programının son sınıfında öğrenim gören 72 öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Nitel araştırma yaklaşımının benimsendiği bu araştırmada, durum çalışması yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak, değişken kullanmadan çözülebilen altı sözel problemden oluşan form hazırlanmıştır. Çalışmadan elde edilen veriler, öğretmen adaylarının yazılı açıklamalarından ve bu adaylar arasından seçilen sekiz öğretmen adayı ile yapılan görüşmelerden elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen verilerin analizinde nitel veri analizi teknikleri kullanılmıştır. Çalışmadan elde edilen bulgular sonucunda, öğretmen adaylarının çoğunun yüzde problemi dışında geriye kalan yaş, hareket, sayı ve işçi problemlerini değişkensiz olarak çözebildikleri ve çözümlerinde çoğunlukla deneme-yanılma stratejisini kullandıkları görülmüştür. Ayrıca bazı öğretmen adaylarının problemleri değişkensiz çözerken problemle ilgili cebirsel denklemde x, y gibi değişkenlerin yerine, ?, ?, ?, * şekilleri kullandıklarında problemleri değişkensiz çözdüklerini düşünerek hata yaptıkları görülmüştür.The purpose of the current study is to investigate the solving skills of word problems without using variables and the strategies and methods used in the process of problem solving of preservice middle school mathematics teachers. With this motivation, the participants of the present study was composed of 72 preservice elementary mathematics teachers (PMSMT) who were final year undergraduate students enrolling in the program of elementary mathematics education in Atatürk University Kazım Karabekir Education Faculty. In the study, case study as one of qualitative approach methods was used. The data were collected through the form including six word problems that could be used without using the variables. The data were gathered through written explanations of all PMSMT in the study and interviews made by eight PMSMT selected in the participants. The qualitative analysis techniques were used in the analysis of the data. In light of the findings of the present study, the PMSMT solved the problems of age, motion, number and worker problems in the form except for the percentage problem without using variables and they usually used trial and error strategy. Moreover, some of them made the errors since they thought that they solved the problems without using variables when they used the symbols of ?,?,?,* instead of the variables of x, y in the algebraic equations in the process of solving problems without using variables
