I wish I could extend a simple,celebratory message, but the reality of the presentmoment has demanded so much more from me andfrom us. I am both heartbroken and hopeful. The devastation of COVID-19 in our communitiessaw the emergence of revolutionary, anti-capitalist mutual aid networks. The policemurders of Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, George Floyd, and others cemented theMovement for Black Lives as the most important grassroots global movement in half acentury. Neoliberal, neoconservative, and alt-right attacks on QTBIPOC visionaryorganizing were met with radical mobilizations of antiracist and decolonial solidarity.And the loss and grief for which there are no words share the same breath with ananger that Audre Lorde embraces as appropriate, clarifying, and liberating.Lightning bolts and forest  res are raging across California as I write this message.The  rst week of classes taught me that students in our Ethnic Studies classes are  re,too. Emerging from the  ercest summer school - the classroom of summer 2020 -these students unapologetically brought the heat to the  rst day of class. Theiranalysis was more incisive, queries more insistent, engagement with one anothermore generous, and decolonial politics more nuanced than I’ve seen in 15 years ofuniversity teaching. Like the lightning complexes burning the state, they areincinerating the delusions of the present system. And like the earth which carries thewisdom to birth itself anew, our students are sharpening the skills and intuitionneeded to create a liberatory society.So much has been sacri ced for this precious moment. And even more will bedetermined by our commitments and actions in the months to come. Iresearched intersectional discrimination inthe outdoors and presented my  ndings inthe Summer Undergraduate ResearchExperience (SURE). I will continue this focusin my senior capstone, and I would love toshare with anyone who is interested!Related to my research this summer, Ibecame a backcountry ranger for Hawai’iVolcano National Park. My partner and Ihiked over 200 miles, checking each cabinand water station to make sure they metnational public health standards given theworld COVID-19 pandemic. As a new residing guest here in Hawai’i, Iam continuously seeking ways to give backto the community as I know this land was illegally stolen by the United States. Findingways to “pay my rent” is very important to me; I am quick to help friends work the‘aina (tend their garden/land), help elders in the community with errands, and drivefriends who do not have a  means of transportation. This is still not enough. and Ihope to pursue deeper connections with my community. My name is Sam. I’m an EthnicStudies major with a double minor inMusic and French. I’m from SWWashington state, and currently, I’m notdoing much but staying inside, hopingthat this pandemic will end soon, andstaring into the void. With the currentcivil rights movement happening in thiscountry, it is important to stay educated,involved, and actively engage in anti-racist practices and pedagogy. One waythat I am contributing while in isolation is the unlearning of colonial narratives andlearning new narratives told by radical authors, artists, musicians, and other Blackcreators. Sitting down and reading is sometimes very tiring, so I recommend listeningto audiobooks written by Black women about the vision for a better future. I’m excitedto start Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Davis soon. Besides that, because of the boredom from quarantine, over the past few months myroommates and I have developed an obsession to start up the old Wii and beat SuperMario Bros. We discovered that if anything can comfort us in this time, it might benostalgia. Hope we have the most successful year possible!Faculty and Sta Dr. Josen Diaz: Practicing Hope asa DisciplineJust the other day, I was listening tonews coverage about Florida publicschool teachers suing the state over thegovernor's mandate to reopen schools. Iwas struck by the teachers' incisivenessto articulate what safety means during apandemic, motivated by a desire to protect their students and their futures. But I wasalso swept by a sense of hopeless resignation about what that future will look like forall of us. Later that day, I shared these thoughts with a mentor-friend of mine, who heard meout but also thoughtfully reminded me that as di icult as things feel right now, thereis no shortage of beauty, joy, and hope everywhere. She said that for those of us whostudy and work against state violence, we remember that we do so to honor andsafeguard that beauty, joy, and hope. I know that this semester is less than ideal (anunderstatement for sure), that sitting in front of a screen for several hours every daydoesn't replicate the feeling of touch or the excited energy of a room  lled with yourpeople. But I hope that you (and I) follow my dear friend's heed to remember it as anopportunity for collectivity. And, as organizer Mariame Kaba reminds us, to practicehope as a discipline.Faculty and Sta Bayan Abusneineh: Baking Bisco Cheesecase as a DisciplineHello! I am an ETHN Lecturer andgraduate student in Ethnic Studies at UCSan Diego.After coming to the realization that I hadno creative ability in me, Covid-19 hit. Ilearned how to cook and bake, and fell inlove. I realized that nothing gives meboth the challenge and the therapeutice ects that baking does for me,especially when it comes out delicious. Currently, my favorite thing to bake is a Bisco  cheesecake with Bisco  spread on top.Everyone that I make it for absolutely loves it, including my new husband who I had abackyard Covid wedding with about a month ago! 2020 has been a wild ride so far andso unexpected. This is something no one ever imagined happening to us, but theimportant thing is to do our best, take care of ourselves, and just be there for oneanother. I tell my students that nothing has prepared us for this - the way that we willget through it is to prioritize our health and safety and be in community with oneanother. Everything else is secondary. The job was amazing, but gradschool…not so much!Back in June, I was out protesting, and it made me re ect on my student activist days!It also forced me to get more serious about what I wanted my contribution to be tothis revolution, and I felt this urge to radicalize my approach to career and success. So,in true 2020 fashion, I’ve done the unprecedented and unpredictable by deciding tonot return to school! I am now creating for myself a path to a career centered in BlackHolistic Wellness — my  rst destination is Black Maternal Health. In September, I willbegin the certi cation process of becoming a doula!I would not be here today if it wasn’t for my Ethnic Studies education! As we step into 2021, Iam present with the complexity of what itmeans to have survived this long. It is di icultto speak of love and solidarity without loss andsacri ce. Each day still feels more demandingthan it should, but I take refuge in and amenlivened by so much:I stand with the indomitable grassrootsorganizers who continue to steer this nationaway from neofascism and neoliberalism andtoward justice. They expand the decolonial andradical democratic possibilities of this (and any) moment and o er us clear roadmapsto freedom. Their liberatory epistemologies and calls to action can be found in thisdepartment’s classes, syllabi, student and faculty research, activism, and relationshipswith one another. I bow to health care workers, essential workers, and parents who are on the frontlinesof the pandemic, especially those caring for our babies and elders. I recently watched76 Days, a documentary about medical workers in Wuhan at the beginning ofoutbreak. Their sheer relentlessness and unconditional compassion taught (andwrecked) me.I am also grateful for my magical sources of joy and reprieve: long backpacking trips,the Xhosa-inspired fantasy novel Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter, late-night phonecalls with the homies, comfort food from MInh Ky Restaurant, and the sound of my 3-year-old nephew singing “Purple Rain” (his 5-year-old sister prefers Sade).Creating peace in the struggle feels more urgent than ever. Neoliberal state violence,climate racism, and the worst economic and public health crises in generationsdemand our action. Our thoughtsmust especially be with his wife Nancyand with their children andgrandchildren. Gene was a Sociologyprofessor for 26 years at USD and was the founder of the Ethnic Studies minor in 1998.In the early 90’s, he recruited several of us in our  rst months at USD to get into GoodTrouble with him and work towards institutional change around educational equity,access, and curriculum reform. Thanks to his pioneering work, Ethnic Studies hasachieved departmental status with a dedicated and brilliant faculty.When we were organizing to establish an Ethnic Studies minor, he spent hissabbatical taking Ethnic Studies courses at UCSD. His intellectual growth wascontinuous as he created many new courses in Sociology that were “ rsts” for USD,including the Sociology of Diversity, Urban Sociology, and Political Sociology. Coupledwith his innovative curriculum was his commitment to educational equity, re ected inhis research on Minority Isolated Schools in San Diego. Not surprisingly, he was chairof the now defunct Social Issues Committee at USD and was faculty advisor for theUnited Front, BSU, and Pride. Professionally, he was Chair of the Social ConscienceCommittee for the Paci c Sociological Association.Gene provided the energy and the discipline to create a coalition of faculty and sta to create an Ethnic Studies minor and sta  its  rst courses. In addition, he supportedstudent e orts to found the United Front Multicultural Center and create a diversityrequirement. He was a wonderful organizer, bringing many of us together, and workingon the administration at the same time. Low-key, sarcastic, full of really bad jokes, hewas able to draw in many a iliated faculty and sta  to the work of reforming the lackof diversity at USD on so many levels. I can’t imagine my  rst years at USD withouthim. All of us who organized with him are obligated to pay it forward and mentorothers to continue the good work.Without the Ethnic Studies and Sociology courses Gene initially created and which arenow much more numerous, our students would now be in a much weaker position tounderstand the current crisis of democracy. As recent events demonstrate, fourhundred years of racial capitalism and other systems of exclusion have brought us toENROLL NOW! My name is My Ly Anna Nguyen. I ama  rst-generation Asian Americangraduating with double majors in EthnicStudies and Finance. My studies arefocused on  nancial disparities and waysto combat generational poverty. I am the VPof Philanthropy in Phi Chi Theta BusinessFraternity and have held a fellowship and afew internships relating to both of mymajors throughout my collegiate career.During the ongoing pandemic, time hasbeen pivotal to my self-re ection. I am notfond of keeping journals and prefer to storememories in photographs and theoccasional voice memo. I am grateful toEthnic Studies, because it gives me wordsand knowledge to prevail where I would otherwise be lost.In January of last year, I was sailing across the world at 15 mph with Semester at Sea. Iwas in Japan when COVID-19 started to spread. During this time, I started an Asian,Asian American, and Allies collective on the ship. I recognized the importance ofhaving a group to engage and discuss xenophobia and our fears of traveling amidst apandemic. Together, we presented stories and slide decks in front of hundreds ofpeople and started conversations around the importance of education.In the new year, I hope to continue educating myself and questioning everythingaround me. Outside of my education and socialjustice work, I have a strong passion forhealth and  tness and am a competitivebodybuilder. I have been competing forslightly under two years now and recentlystarted my own personal training business here in San Diego. My future plans are totake at least one gap year to explore both my passions further and decide where Iwould like to take them.I chose to be an Ethnic Studies major, because after growing up in predominantlywhite communities, I felt that Ethnic Studies classes shattered my bubble of privilegeand exposed me to social realities that are not taught in grade school. Not only is it anextremely practical skill --especially in my role as CopleyLibrary's faculty liaison to EthnicStudies -- but I've always lovedstudying languages and linguistics.To me, it's fascinating to see howwords are added and meaningschange over time to re ect newlived realities. Even grammar getsme excited!I  rst took Spanish in high schooland college, but I never feltcon dent actually speaking it. Since graduation, I havestarted pursuing a Master’s degree inPsychology at University of Chicago andam currently doing research in theRecovery & Empowerment AfterCommunity Trauma (REACT) Clinic onUChicago’s medical campus. The REACTclinic provides trauma-informed mental health services to the surrounding communitya ected by community violence. The goal of the clinic is to provide a more structurallycompetent mental health care model that attends to racial and economicdiscrimination in trauma histories. My research focuses on the structural racisminvolved in the diagnosis of trauma and evaluates whether the REACT clinic isproviding the best diagnosis methods it can for the communities it serves.Looking back at my time at USD, I am so thankful for the Ethnic Studies Department. Ithas forever changed how I view myself in the world both as a person and as ascientist. One of the most dynamic parts of Ethnic Studies as a discipline is that itprovides tools to talk about social justice across di erent disciplines and  elds. This tradition, however,celebrates the cyclical nature of all life: deathimplies rebirth, what was will come again,nothing is permanent. Many of the events of 2020 have been seenbefore, but they resurge with newpermutations and implications. Voter suppression, violence against Black people, theattack on women’s rights, pandemics and economic collapse surge and subside withthe ongoing power struggles for competing visions of the economic and social order.This time around, I have been inspired by the power and global signi cance ofresistance against economic and political repression. Many people of all kinds hit thestreets to protest the murder of unarmed Black men and women. The overt and almostcomic attempts at voter suppression are sending thousands of people of all races tostand in line for hours to vote. These are violations we once associated primarily withJim Crow laws. At USD, I have been privileged to sit in on faculty coalitions thatsupport our brave Black faculty’s long overdue demands for racial justice andinstitutional transformation. The greatest inspiration has surely been the people going out, often at personal risk,to march, to protest, to challenge authority, and to vote. I would add, as an EthnicStudies educator, that if one wanted to understand this historical moment, it would beimpossible without our curriculum; and that is why the current administration in D.C.has tried to suppress all teaching about white supremacy, slavery, and unconsciousbias.In the spirit of this celebration, we can answer the voices of repression with thedicho/saying: “They tried to bury us. TWECwill transform the Turning Wheel businto a hotspot to provide internet accessin communities of color, such as LoganHeights, Linda Vista and south SanDiego. With support from the MulvaneyCenter, USD student leaders, the ChicanoPark Museum and Cultural Center,Nativity Prep Academy, the Chicano ParkSteering Committee, and ViaInternational, TWEC addresses theeducational inequities and widening digital divide created by remote learning in theage of COVID.A recent study sponsored by San Diego for Every Child reports that 100,00 students donot have internet access in San Diego County. The average student has fallen 7months behind their studies. Even more alarming, Black and Latinx students are fallingbehind 10 months! The community and educational partnership of TWEC addressesthis digital divide by equipping the Turning Wheel bus with the technology needed toassist up to 100 students at a time.TWEC will o icially launch on February 13 at Chicano Park. Trauma is an aspect of life that, toa certain degree, we all experience. Zainab Amadahy writes, “Capitalism, colonialismand heteropatriarchy make us sick. Are our responses healing us? Are our actionsgenerating wellbeing for others? Or are we unintentionally reproducing the kind ofrelationships that make us sick in the  rst place?” I believe that in order to shape theworld, we must address harm and integrate healing—individually and collectively. Ihave always been drawn to the potential of shaping society via personal healingoutside of the medical-industrial complex.Grounding my studies in the Ethnic Studies framework has been crucial, because ithas guided me to look at the issues that a ect us individually in a systematic way. It isthrough this curriculum that I have come to see that everything is interconnected, theentire structure interdependent in all its parts. With a deeper understanding of howour systems in place work, I am better equipped to see the cracks in the structure, thealternatives that carry wisdom for us in this moment, and a potential way through.Ethnic Studies has shown me that empires rise and fall, but you can always look to theresistance that is happening in this moment, that has always been happening in theface of all moments of oppression. Senior SpotlightDelaney Tax: Liberatory LoveMy name is Delaney Tax, and I am EthnicStudies major with minors in Architectureand Gender Studies. Outside of my timespent in Ethnic Studies classes, I am aKeck fellow for the 2020-2021 academicyear doing research on the impacts ofcolonial urban planning and thethresholds along which bodies arecategorized, restricted, and accepted inthe built environment. I am also afounding member of USD GESP, anorganizing collective advocating forinclusive and accessible sex education,protection, and contraceptives on campus (amongst many, many other things). With the e ects of hypercapitalism and systemic racism occupying the world stageand our collective conscience, I feel endlessly grateful to be studying Ethnic Studies.This department has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and community that hasfundamentally shaped the way I interact with myself, others, and the environment. We had aline of over three hundred people waitingsince 5:00 am, wishing to get theModerna Vaccine administered by twomedical organizations, Champions forHealth and the USD School of Nursing.The Chicano Park Steering Committeealong with the Turning Wheel Project, theMulvaney Center, the Brown Berets andthe San Diego Latino Health Coalitionentered into a partnership with thesemedical teams with a plan to vaccinatethe “disconnected” in our city.The line was comprised of young and old essential workers, abuelitas, danzantes,brown bodies missing documents and without access to wi , and non-Englishspeaking COVID-19 survivors. They waited patiently, seeking the "privilege" to get thatmagical vacuna (vaccine) into their brown arms knowing quite well that the odds wereagainst them: Latinx people represent 55% of COVID-19 cases, 51% of COVID-relatedhospitalizations and over 44% of COVID-related deaths, yet are only 33% of thepopulation in San Diego County. A harsh reality of being POC and poor in the midst ofa devastating pandemic.As the clock drew closer to 9:00 am, we waited with anticipation alongside ourcommunity to commence with this historic event. Little did we know that our medicalteam partners had other plans. Without consultation or permission, the partners hadselected 27 outsiders to receive the  rst shots of the day. Occupying the nicely alignedrows of socially-distant chairs meant for Logan Heights residents, these privilegedoutsiders methodically lifted their sleeves in preparation for their vaccination, aheadof those who had been waiting patiently for nearly four hours.The medical teams quickly launched into a premeditated rationale, explaining thatanother vaccine event had been cancelled which justi ed giving these individualspriority and and bypassing the long line of Logan Heights residents that had beenwaiting before sunrise. They assured us that they were not taking the vaccines meantfor our community. This preferential treatment was magni ed by the fact that thechosen 27 were all outsiders and white! What was a preventative decision for theprivileged 27 to get vaccinated was a life and death decision for the Latinx residentsof the neighborhood.In Ethnic Studies, we adopt a critical lens recognizing the social context out of whichour work and struggle arise. We incessantly work to decolonize unequal arrangementsas we strive to change situations through our actions. From the outset, we decided tosupport a vaccination event in our community being that our people are the mostimpacted by COVID in San Diego. Without direct access to the vaccine, we had nochoice but to work with medical teams who had expressed excitement in working withour community since they lacked the interpersonal and organizing skills required toaccess and mobilize our community.This encounter highlights the realities of COVID apartheid. Because our communitiesdo not have direct access to the vaccine, we are required to be dependent on peopleoutside of our community in order to survive. The inquiry remains: why are we forcedto work with people who have no vested interest in our survival and instead are drivenby pro t as they receive dollars to give the vaccine to the less fortunate and then turnaround and boast about it on their social media?Our Turning Wheel Bus aka Barrio Bus is represented by the Mayan Olin symbol thatacknowledges movement as a life-giving source of transformation of self andcommunity. While 300+ people were vaccinated that day, we must relentlesslyorganize our communities in order to bring change. We are meeting with the medicalteams next week. I’m a  rst-generation Latinamajoring in Political Science and EthnicStudies with a Spanish minor. Within mystudies, I have been especially interestedin immigrant rights, advocacy, and borderissues. Growing up in a predominantlywhite county, I didn’t understand what itmeant to be proud of and embrace whereI came from until my late teenage years.Being one of less than 15 Latinx studentsin my graduating high school class, I feltlike an outsider, but always did my bestto try and understand my roots, culture, and traditions. It wasn’t until college that I feltI had a space to do so openly and without judgement.After taking an Ethnic Studies class, I was hooked. It allowed me to openly resonatewith, understand and empathize with the challenges and struggles that I hadencountered in my early years of schooling. As a USD transfer student, I have beengrateful for the ways in which this department has allowed me to grow, learn andbloom amongst my incredible peers and professors. As the daughter of immigrants, Ihope to utilize both of my majors and minor as well as my passion for immigrationissues to continue this journey of solidarity by attending law school in the near future.Moving forward, I recognize the importance of remembering my roots. As a practitioner ofHip-Hop culture and pedagogy, his workis motivated by a commitment toactualizing a world liberated from whitesupremacist patriarchal violence. He isinvested in Hip-Hop as a vehicle foryouth resistance, critical pedagogy,cross-cultural coalition building andsocial justice. Some of his hobbies include calisthenics,salsa and bachata, and abolishing thecarceral system. He also got intowatching anime recently. He's usuallyhanging out with a really sweet pitbullnamed Nala. Always happy to connectwith students, alumni or other cool folks!Alexis Meza is a doctoral candidate inthe Department of History at UC SanDiego. Her research focuses on thepolitics of historical and collectivememory of the Salvadoran diaspora. Inher work, she centers the practices ofmigrant and refugee memory,remembrance, and epistemologies topush against presumed silences andabsences in the historical record. Alexis organizes with collectives in theSan Diego borderlands as part of thelarger movement to abolish immigrationdetention, end the criminalization ofmigration, and defend the right toasylum. She also enjoys biking, campingand wants to learn to play the guitar.Alumni NewsTaylor Fuentes, Class of 2015Hello everyone! It has been almost sixyears since I graduated from USD with adouble major in Ethnic Studies andPolitical Science. After graduation, Iattended California Western School ofLaw where I earned my J.D. in Spring2018. Thankfully, I passed the bar thatsame year, and I will forever feel soprivileged to call myself an attorney.During law school and for a brief timeafter passing the bar, I worked atAppellate Defenders, Inc. a nonpro torganization that represents individuals who cannot a ord legal representation intheir criminal appeals. I am currently a sta  attorney for one of the appellate courts inCalifornia. I enjoy crocheting, hiking, and helping law students prepare for oralargument competitions.I am so grateful to the entire Ethnic Studies Department. Each class challenged me,broadened my world view, and cemented my desire to become an attorney who iscommitted to social justice. Learning to unpack, examine, and challenge the dominantnarrative has been an invaluable skill in my personal life and work. This year has beenchallenging, and I hope that you are all being kind to yourselves and to each other.
