McGinnis Center Housing Lotteries UD Archives Roesch Library February 1990 Don't be left out in the cold next year. Enter the University Housing Lottery to win the home of your choice. There will be four lotteries. The first is open only to sophomores. The other three lotteries will be open to all upper-class students. The first lottery, for the V.W. Kettering Residence Hall, will be held on Sunday, February 25, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. The second lottery, for University Houses, will be held on Sunday, March 4, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. The lottery for four-person Garden Apartments will be held on Sun­day, March 11, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. Thanks again to Tony and Rachel! Help House Update The McGinnis Center and Housing Office encourage all Ghetto residents to register their homes as Help Houses. The Help House program, begun 10 years ago, acts as a Neighborhood Watch Program. Each house displaying the bright orange Help House sticker agrees to help any persons needing assistance in the Ghetto. The sticker should be displayed beneath the porch light so that those traveling through the Ghetto can easily recognize the Help Houses. Participation in the Help House program will help make the Ghetto a safe and enjoyable place to live and play. To register your house as a Help House, stop by the McGinnis Center or in the SGA office in Kennedy Union. Or call the McGinnis Center at 229-2047 for more information. Your cooperation and support will be greatly appreciated. Lock Changes Still in Progress Students residing in former Ross Rental Properties now owned by the University are still having locks changed on their houses. We anticipated this work being completed by the first week in February; however, due to a delivery problem, our timetable must be extended. Plans call for all lock changes being completed by March 2, and our maintenance staff will leave all new keys with a resident of each house. Less than 70 days until hundreds of UD students throw down their books and head for the sunny beaches of Daytona Beach. SGA's 14th annual Fun in the Sun Dayton to Day­tona trip leaves on April 30 and returns on May 9. Students can choose between two price package options: $159 in­cluding transportation and hotel and $109 for the hotel alone. In addition, a $25 damage deposit must also be paid for the hotel room. The deposit money will be mailed back to students if rooms are found in satisfactory condition after departure. Beachfront hotels which will accommodate UD students for the week include The International Inn, Travelodge, and the Econolodge. Included in the fee will be poolside parties and BBQs, volleyball and basketball tournaments, and belly flop contests. According to SGA's Programming Coordinator Michael Hawk, there will also be optional side trips to Disney World and the Epcot Center, deep sea fishing, and scuba diving. Special UD nights are planned at local bars and at the popular Daytona Dog Track Races. Also included in the fee will be free admission to a comedy night featuring comedian and actor Bobcat Goldthwait. Goldthwait' s credits include such well-known movies as "Police Academy II" and "Scrooged." SGA has planned a series of money information meetings. For addi­tional information about how you can have Fun in the Sun, stop by the SGA Office in KU 233 or call x4444. Rid Yourself of Winter Blahs By Rachel Brown Are the winter blahs getting you down? Well, don't. let the cold weather stop you from participating in fun and challenging activities. The PAC wants you to get involved in some of the many intramural events planned for the semester. The intramural events are organized on a team and individual basis so desire to play is much more important than ability. In order to register for an intramural event, each person or group must pick up an Entry Blank and Information Sheet from the Recreational Sports Office in Room 211 of the PAC. The Entry blank must be completely filled out and returned to the Intramural Office before 8: 00 p. m. on the designated deadline date. Meetings are held after the deadline date to hand out schedules, rules and regulations for all sports events. Each team must have a captain or team representative at the meeting. T earn sports are divided into Competitive or Recreational divisions based on skill and the type of competition desired. For more information about intramural activities, call the Recrea­tional Sports Department at x2731 or stop by Room 211 in the PAC. Although many students and faculty take a much needed vacation, for Julia Wingard, Director of Conferences, and Amy Lopez, Assistant Director of Conferences, work is just beginning. For three hot summer months they organize the housing, food services, and coordination of over 5,000 people attending such events as retreats and company training conferences at UD. "Most students don't realize all the conferences and meetings that go on around here during the summer," said Amy. From May 1 to August 1 groups ranging from the Dynamic Cheerleaders Association to the Ohio State Beekeepers to the Far Hills Baptist Church will be using UD's facilities for conferences that last for one day or up to three weeks. Although the success of pulling these conferences off without a hitch requires the involvement of many University departments such as Kennedy Union, Food Service, and the Fieldhouse, "Julia and I are in charge of bringing it all together," said Amy. With the help of many UD students acting as conference coordinators, conference resident assistants and desk workers at Marycrest and V.W. Kettering, this task is made a little easier Amy said. Sometimes, though, special arrangements can be difficult to accommodate. One year, for example, Amy had a group from India on campus for a cultural weekend program, and they wanted their meals catered in from an Indian restaurant in Columbus. Amy had to make special arrangements with Food Service, but, in the end, it all worked out. "We do everything to ensure that things go smoothly (for the groups)," said Amy. "You have to be very flexible in this business." This flexibility and the University's· above average facilities, Amy believes, are the reasons for the success of UD's summer conference program. "We have housing and luxury suites that most other schools can't provide," said Amy. Each guest receives a comment card and "Food Service continues to get exceptional ratings," she added. According to Amy, this summer, a group of Italian high school students will get the "United States experience" by attendii;ig classes here and just learning about the American way of life. On the weekend of June 22-24, there will also be four UD alumni reunions for the Classes of 1940, 1950, 1965, and 1970. According to Regis Lekan, from the Alumni Relations Depart­ment, these summertime reunion weekends on campus have become more popular in the past two years. "Not only is it a neat thing to see people that are familiar to you," said Regis, "but also places that are familiar to you." Regis described the hectic summer schedule as a "three ring circus" and Amy agrees that the conference staff has to work "double time" for those three months. Despite the difficult schedule, though, Amy enjoys the challenging aspects of her job. "My job is fun because it involves me with many different people on campus," she said. "It also tests my ability to coordinate events." UD Telefund, the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, and SGA are teaming up to sponsor the 1990 Senior Class Challenge. The Challenge's basic purpose is to encourage seniors to make a pledge to the University of $25 to $100 which will not have to be paid until the end of 1990. All seniors will be contacted between March 11 and March 22 by UD telefund employees and will receive reminders in the mail one month after graduation. According to Gine Hoying, UD Telefund's Assistant Director of Annual Support, the money collected will be used for financial aid, scholarships and new equipment for the University. The Senior Class Challenge "Happy Hour" Kick-Off Party will take place on Friday, March 9 in the Pub at 4:30. The theme of this year's challenge is "100% Senior" and it will be printed on buttons and a banner which seniors will be able to sign the week of March 12 in KU Lobby. Other events planned include a Senior Class Mass on March 18 and a Senior Night at Flanagan's on March 22. The Senior Class Challenge will wrap up on "Senior Day," Friday, March 23. Activities for the day include a Resume Balloon Launch, a Senior Class Picture, and a Prize Giveaway to take place in the Plaza beginning at 3:00 p.m. The month-long senior activities will encourage seniors to support the University's reputation and quality of education as well as celebrate their last weeks as UD students. Talent Search Do you have a talent that you think is worthy of an award? Well, the Dayton area American Lung Association is sponsoring a Talent Night in the Pub on March 13 to allow you to put your talents and abilities to work! Judges will be on hand and the top acts will be awarded ex-citing prizes. All proceeds will benefit the American Lung Association.
