In this issue author Andy DeRoche explores Civil War diaries and letters that reveal soldiers’ feelings about saving the Union, enlisting in the Army, and voting for Lincoln. These writings in turn dem onstrate the soldier’s overarching concern for the family back home. A uthorjohn  Blaisdell similarly uses primary docum ents —account books left by doctors in .W interport and Ham pden — to give us a taste of nineteenth-century medicine.Cover illustration from H ARPER’S M ONTHLY MAGAZINE.
