展覧会 : システィーナ礼拝堂500年祭記念 ミケランジェロ展――天才の軌跡著者 川瀬 佑介雑誌名 国立西洋美術館報巻 48ページ 29-30発行年 2015-03-31URL http://id.nii.ac.jp/1263/00000149/29ミケランジェロ・ブオナローティ（1475–1564）は、ルネサンスの頂点を極めた、西洋美術における最も偉大な芸術家のひとりである。本展覧会は、「神のごとき」と称され、生前から現在に至るまで深く崇敬を集めるミケランジェロの創造の軌跡とその波紋を、彼の子孫のコレクションを引き継ぐカーサ・ブオナローティ（フィレンツェ）の所蔵品60点によって紹介した。ミケランジェロの作品・資料に関しては世界一の質と量を誇る同館の全面的な協力を得たことで、フレスコ画や巨大な石彫といった持ち運び不可能な作品によっておもに知られるこの芸術家の個展を、日本で開催することが可能となった。展覧会は第1章「伝説と真実：ミケランジェロとカーサ・ブオナローティ」、第2章「ミケランジェロとシスティーナ礼拝堂」、第3章「建築家ミケランジェロ」、第4章「ミケランジェロと人体」という4章で構成された。なかでも最終章に出品された大理石浮彫り《階段の聖母》は、彼が15歳前後で制作したとされるもので、所蔵館を離れ長期貸出展示されるのは本展が史上初の機会となった。その他素描を中心とする30点を超すミケランジェロの作品類が一堂に会する機会はきわめて貴重で、天才の知られざる創造的プロセスとその秘密に迫る、格好の機会となった。また同時に、これまであまり知られていない彼の手紙や自筆手稿類なども紹介し、この偉大な芸術家の制作における苦悩や人間的側面にも光を当てた。本展はカーサ・ブオナローティが海外に巡回させた史上最大規模の展覧会である。また日本においても史上最大数のミケランジェロの作品類が一堂に会した展覧会でもあり、ネームバリューから一定の集客があった。しかしその本当の眼目は、「天才の軌跡」という副題にあるように、ともすれば「神業」のように語られがちなミケランジェロの巨大な彫刻や大フレスコ画面が実際にどのようにして作り出されたのか、それを作り出した人間ミケランジェロはどのような人物であったのか、そして「神のごとき」芸術家ミケランジェロというステレオタイプはどのようにして形成されていったのか、そうしたさまざまな過程＝軌跡を浮かび上がらせることでこの芸術家の新たな側面を提示することにあった。システィーナ礼拝堂の天井画・壁画のための準備素描を中心に、彼の自筆の書簡、メモなどの史料類も多数出品されたのはそのような意図に基づく。多くの観衆は完成作であるシスティー ナ礼拝堂の巨大な天井画・壁画を想起して来館すると想定されため、それらに関して文字による解説に留まらず、大型写真パネルや、原寸大部分模型（大塚国際美術館より借用）、そして現地で新たに撮影した高精細4K 映像を用いた視覚資料などを用い、展示の充実に努めた。とりわけ4K 映像はそれ自体が大きな話題ともなり、展覧会の付帯コンテンツのひとつとして今後の活用にも可能性を広げるものであった。こうした試みにより、来館者に習作素描と完成作の関連、および完成作のスケールを具体的に把握してもらうことが出来たのではないかと思う。また書簡類は作品脇に概要をまとめたキャプションを掲示するのみならず、原文全文書き起こしと邦語対訳を冊子にまとめたもの制作し、より深く興味をもった来館者には会場で座りながら自由に閲覧できるようにした。こうした試みは、あらかじめ美術史的知識がなければ制作された用途や文脈を理解しにくい素描習作や書簡類が主体の本展の鑑賞・理解のために必要不可欠なツールであり、それらは来館者にも好評であった。西洋のオールドマスター作家の個展を開催しようとすると、作品の希少性や高額な評価額だけでなく、物理的制限 —フレスコ画や巨大彫刻のように—から代表作の借用が不可能な作家が数多く存在する。ミケランジェロはその代表的存在であり、一般的に良く知られ人気のある彼の作品の出品はそもそも物理的に不可能であり、本展の内容も多彩な色彩をもたない習作素描や小型彫刻が主体の、一般的には「地味」とされるものであった。本展はそうした習作素描の価値や意義を、映像など前述のさまざまな資料により補完しながら来場者にわかりやすく展示するよう心掛け、そうした全体の構成が来館者の満足度や評価を押し上げる効果をもっていたと考える。それにより本展は目標数を上回る入館者を得ることが出来たと考えるが、ミケランジェロというネームバリューが一定数の来館者を引き寄せたことは間違いなく、そうした来館客層からは、やはり完成作の不在を不満に思う声が聞かれた。今後こうした素描を中心とした展覧会を開催する際、どのようにして興味をもって観客に見てもらうのか、今後も更なる検討・実践が必要である。 （川瀬佑介）［カタログ］編集：川瀬佑介、TBS テレビ制作：印象社会場輸送・展示：日本通運会場設営：乃村工藝社システィー ナ礼拝堂500年祭記念 ミケランジェロ展—天才の軌跡Michelangelo Buonarroti— The Making of a Genius and the 500th Anniversary of the Sistine Chapel会期：2013年9月6日–11月17日主催：国立西洋美術館 ／ TBS ／朝日新聞社入場者数：220,144人Duration: 6 September–17 November 2013Organizers: National Museum of Western Art / Tokyo Broadcasting System Television Inc. / The Asahi ShimbunNumber of visitors: 220,14430Michelangelo represents the pinnacle achievement of the Renaissance and is considered one of the greatest artists in the history of Western art. Through its introduction of 60 works from the Casa Buonarroti (Florence) collection of Michelangelo’s descendants, this exhibition explored the creative achievement and influence of this artist who has been revered as an almost god-like figure throughout his lifetime and into the present. Thanks to the full cooperation of the Casa Buonarroti, renowned as a world-leading collection of Michelangelo’s works and historical materials both in terms of quality and quantity, we presented this solo exhibition on the artist known primarily through the frescos and massive sculptures whose format and scale prevent their overseas display.The exhibition was comprised of four sections, namely, Section 1: The Man and the Myth – Michelangelo and the Casa Buonarroti, Section 2: Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel, Section 3: Michelangelo the Artchitect, and Section 4:Michelangelo and the Human Body.Among the displayed works, this was the first time that the marble relief Madonna of the Stairs – displayed in Section 4 of this exhibition and thought to have been created when he was around 15 years old – was lent by its owner for such a long display period. This exhibition also provided the extremely rare opportunity to see more than 30 works by Michelangelo, primarily drawings, allowing exhibition visitors a superb opportunity to trace the creative process of this genius and his secrets. The exhibition introduced his less well known items, such as his letters and other literary materials, thus bringing into focus the human aspects and suffering he endured during his lifetime.This exhibition was the largest overseas touring exhibition mounted by the Casa Buonarroti. It also represented the largest group of Michelangelo works ever put on display in Japan, and attracted a certain audience simply on the name value of its artist. And yet in fact, the exhibition sought to present new aspects of this artist, as seen in its subtitle, “The Making of a Genius,” examining the traces of the various processes by which Michelangelo became the artist he was. The exhibition posed questions such as how did Michelangelo create his massive sculptures and frescos that appear beyond human power and god-like in their accomplishment; what kind of person was this man Michelangelo who could create such art, and how was the god-like artist Michelangelo stereotype formed. The display of numerous examples of his own writings, from letters to notes and focusing on preparatory drawings for the Sistine Chapel frescoes, was based on these intentions.We imagined that many of the visitors to the exhibition would come to the museum with thoughts of Michelangelo’s completed works, such as the massive Sistine Chapel frescoes, in mind. So we did not stop at simply presenting such immovable materials in textual form, we rounded out the display area with large-scale photographic panics, actual size partial replicas (borrowed from the Ōtsuka Museum of Art), and newly shot 4K video high-resolution video imagery of the works in situ. Indeed, this 4K video imagery itself became a big talking point at the exhibition, and its success opened up the possibility for the future utilization of 4K video programs as exhibition-related contents. Through such experiments, visitors can gain an understanding of the relationship between preparatory drawings and their finished work, and indeed of the scale of the finished work itself. Further, not only did we display labels that summarized the contents of letters and other materials next to the works themselves, we produced a pamphlet with full transcriptions of the original texts and their accompanying Japanese translations. This allowed visitors with deeper interest in the subjects to sit in the galleries and freely read more detailed information. This experiment was well received by visitors, and was an essential tool in viewing and understanding this kind of exhibition focused on preparatory drawings and documents that are somewhat hard to understand without art historical background or knowledge about their use and context.When a museum sets out to hold a solo exhibition of an Old Master artist, not only must we consider the rarity and high value of the artworks involved, we must also realize that there are many artists whose major works cannot be borrowed from purely physical limitations, such as frescoes and massive sculptures. Michelangelo is representative of such. The physical impossibility of displaying his popular, generally well known works and the fact that this exhibition consisted primarily of less colorful drawings and small-scale sculpture meant that the general reaction was that it was subdued in tone. Through the use of the videos and other materials discussed above we sought to create a display that would aid visitors in understanding the true value and meaning of preparatory drawings, and thus I think that the overall resulting exhibition composition raised visitor satisfaction and exhibition evaluations. Considering that these efforts resulted in greater than expected audience numbers, some of those visitors mainly attracted by the “name value” artist Michelangelo expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of finished works. When we organize such drawing-focused exhibitions in the future, we must further consider how we can encourage visitor interest in this type of art.
