This paper aims at presenting the image of China elaborated by Western observers, especially French ones, during the age of the Enlightenment. The paper is the last scientific contribution by Michel Henri Kowalewicz before his death. Although unfinished, we decided to publish this work in the journal he founded, and left us in heritage, in the conviction that this fragment of memory can benefit the research field of the history of ideas
