The influence of Flavius Ardabur Aspar on the election of the Emperors in the Eastern Roman Empire

Abstract

Tematem pracy jest udział Flawiusza Ardabura Aspara, wodza armii bizantyńskiej barbarzyńskiego pochodzenia, w wyborze imperatorów Marcjana i Leona. Przeprowadzona analiza ma na celu ocenę rzeczywistego wpływu jaki wywarł Aspar na obsadę tronu w Konstantynopolu, w oparciu o zachowane przekazy źródłowe oraz przez pryzmat sytuacji politycznej zarówno wschodniego jak i zachodniego Cesarstwa. Rozdział pierwszy poświęcony jest przebiegowi kariery alańskiego wodza podczas panowania Teodozjusza II. W drugim rozdziale przedstawiono kulisy cesarskiej elekcji Marcjana w 450 r. Trzeci rozdział omawia wzrost znaczenia rodziny Ardaburiuszy w imperialnej administracji w latach 450-457. Tematem kolejnej części jest obiór Leona na cesarza w 457 r. Ostatni rozdział dotyczy desygnacji syna Aspara Patrycjusza na cezara - oficjalnego sukcesora władzy.The subject of the thesis is the participation of barbarian descent general of Byzantine Army - Flavius Ardabur Aspar in the election of emperors Marcian and Leon. The purpose of the analysis is evaluation, based on preserved sources, of the real Aspar’s influence on imperial appointments in Constantinople. The political situation of the Eastern and Western Roman Empire was taken into consideration as well. The first chapter of the thesis is devoted to career of Alan general during Theodosius’ II reign. In the second chapter the background of Marcian’s election in 450 was discussed. The growth of importance in imperial administration of the Ardaburian family in 450 – 457 is the subject of the next chapter. The fourth chapter is about the election of Leo in 457. In the last chapter the Aspar’s son Patricius designation as a Caesar – official successor of power was presented
