Possibly recommended by medical practitioners,consumers consider natural products as an alternative todecrease health cost, alleviate self-diagnosed diseases, orsupplement prescribed therapeutic regimens. The naturalproducts have become a large sale on a global basis and theyrepresent an increasing share in healthcare market reachingestimated $6 billion annually only in the USA [2, 3].Labeled as “natural,” the natural medications and nutri-tion supplements often puzzle consumers turning them to“completely safe” products based on the perception. In fact,many natural products affect the body in unwanted waysthat can potentially lead to serious side effects, even life-threatening results, becausemany products contain unknownand unquantified active ingredients [4, 5]. It is very importantto promote a full and open discussion on quality controlof nature medicine products and nutrient supplements forconsumers and professionals. Actually, studies on naturalproducts are challenging by several reasons [6–9]. As natureproducts are plant-driven, product variation can occur atmultiple stages of production, from season variation andidentification of plant source to the manufacturing process.More importantly, unlike most modern medications, naturalproducts are typical mixtures that vary greatly. The identityand quantity of the compounds contained within a givennatural product is a frequent complication of studies [6]. Evenwhen composition is relatively well understood, the lack ofsimple and effective analyticalmethods hampers the ability toextrapolate results beyond quality studied [8]. Furthermore,pharmacological effects of many components in the naturalproducts are still not clear due, in large part, to deficiencyof a number of fully developed systems of investigation andpredication [9].This special issue has been driven from the editors’ hopethat the readers will be able to obtain different kinds ofknowledge on natural products from many contributors.Ten publications from original research are encompassingmethods and techniques relevant to the detection, sep-aration, purification, identification, and quantification ofcompounds in biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology,Hindawi Publishing CorporationJournal of Analytical Methods in ChemistryVolume 2014, Article ID 109068, 2 pageshttp://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/1090682 Journal of Analytical Methods in Chemistryand biotechnology fields. The authors of this thematic issueare researchers from a wide variety of areas and provide acomprehensive summary of the most recent knowledge andreferences on quality control of natural products.From an analytical perspective, this focus issue providesa forum for discussion among researchers engaged in basicscientific work in natural product chemistry. As extractionprocedures and ingredients of natural products are a per-manently demanding challenge for the analytical chemist,highly efficient techniques to handle the problems associatedwith sample preparation, separation, and identification havebeen applied to reduce the complexity of plant materialsin this issue. With the development of stationary phasesallowing endless possibilities in terms of selectivity, analyticalplatforms including long-term enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B) spectroscopy, FI-NIR based imaging, doubly chargedselected ion coupled with mass spectrometry, and liquidchromatography-ultraviolet detection coupled with electro-spray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrome-try (LC-UV-ESI-Q/TOF/MS) have been established to profileand characterize plant materials and/or their extractives.Vibrational spectroscopies offer the advantages of fast, non-invasive, and simultaneous determination of chemical andphysical properties being suitable for high-throughput ana-lytical quality control.From a drug development perspective, this issue providesa forum for scientific research expanding to preclinicalstudies. Novel approaches have been developed for screeningthe prototype components and in vivo metabolites basedon rapid and sensitive techniques. The identification andstructural elucidation of the chemical compounds provideessential data for further pharmacological and pharmacoki-netic studies. Moreover, two articles are devoted to studyingpharmacological effects of natural products. The complexityof single medication or compound preparations has hadeffect on biological signal transductions in animal modelsand those studies could provide key information for furtherexploration. With new technologies for diagnosis, studieson the therapeutic efficacy of natural products are alwaysneeded. Therefore, these areas are also included in the issue.In this special issue, the publications have been includedas described above, discussing various aspects of qualitycontrol of natural products in detail. More than hundredsof references totally found at the end of each publicationwill make this thematic issue useful not only for naturalproduct researchers, but also for many scientists working innumerous fields. Much effort has been invested by all thecontributing authors, reviewers, editors, and staff to havecurrent information.
