This meetingis called and hosted by Dr. Afua Cooper, the Ruth WynnWoodward Chair in the Department of Women's Studies,Simon Fraser University, as part of the Chair's academic /community outreach.This is a ground-breaking workshop and it will providea space where scholars of various disciplines working onBlack Studies come together to engage in critical dialogueabout the state of Black Canadian Studies, and other issuesfacing them.In the past three decades, Black Canadian Studies,that is, the scholarly inquiry of the Black or African-descended portion of the Canadian population, hasexperienced much growth. Yet, there is a feeling that it hasnot received the institutional and financial support crucialfor its consolidation. This proposed workshop, KnowledgeProduction and the Black Experience in Canada will be ameeting of the leading scholars, mainly Canadian, but alsointernational, who work in the multidisciplinary field of BlackCanadian Studies. These professionals now constitute acritical mass of scholars in the field. The workshop will atthe Segal Business School at SFU downtown.Dr. Cooper is a leading historian of Black Canada and theauthor of the Hanging of Angelique. She recently curated anexhibit on BC's Black history, Black Communities in BritishColumbia, 1858-2008 as part of the 150th anniversary of thefounding of British Columbia as a colony.
