2009 Oklahoma Peanut Variety Survey  Chad Godsey, OSU Cropping Systems Specialist                              February, 2010                                          Production Technology Report 2010-05 ______________________________________________________________________________  Oklahoma peanut variety usage in 2009 was estimated from USDA FSA County Acreage Reporting by market type and a survey of peanut seed companies in Oklahoma that sold seed for planting in the state. Sixty-six percent of the peanut acres in Oklahoma were planted to a high oleic variety, while 34% were planted to a non-high oleic variety.   Spanish market types were grown on the greatest acreage in Oklahoma in 2009 (Table 1). Runner and Virginia market types accounted for 37% and 22%, respectively, of the total peanut acres in Oklahoma. The increase in acres Planted to Spanish varieties is an increase over past years (data not shown). From 2005-2008, Runner market types were planted on the majority of acres.   Table 1. Tamrun OL07 was planted on 80% of the Runner acres.   Table 2. Runner varieties sold and estimated acreages planted. Tamnut OL06 was planted on 76% of Spanish acres and Tamspan 90 was planted on 16% of acres. Percent of planted acres to Spanish varieties increased in 2009 compared to previous years.  Table 4. Tamnut OL06 and Tamrun OL07 were the varieties that were planted on the most acres in Oklahoma. The acreage planted to these newer varieties signal the need for improved disease and increased yield potential to keep peanut production profitable in Oklahoma.   Table 5.
