This special and unique celebration is designed to acknowledge the struggles of Chicanos and Latinos students for their self-determination and perseverance in achieving a college degree We would also like to take this opportunity to recognize their families, university faculty and staff members, peers, and friends who have supported them in their academic endeavors. In the memorable occasion, we would like to commemorate the Graduates for their triumphs and grand success. Throughout the years, these graduates have sacrificed endless hours into their studies, in order to attain their desired goals and dreams. Many faced obstacles along their journey that made it almost impossible to continue their education; however, regardless of how narrow the road became, they did not give up, and are here with us today celebrating their achievements. It is our sincere wish that each graduate returns to their respective communities to share and serve their expertise. We hope that this celebration reach the minds of our youth and motivate them to continue their education and onto higher roles to serve as leaders of tomorrow. Masters of Counselor Education My name is Charlene Diana Marquez-Roybal. I am thirty-four years old, married for six years to Ron Roybal and together we have a beautiful twenty-two month old daughter, Veronica Andrea. My parents and family have been my strength and support throughout my education. I graduated from SJSU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology in 1980. I pursued my graduate work in Marriage and Family, Child Counseling part-time in 1985 and received my Masters of Arts degree in Summer of 1991. I have been a Senior Group Counselor at Juvenile Probation for seven years and plan to continue my counseling career working with families in the Chicano Community. Maryanne Archuleta lsensee .......... B.A. Creative Arts Maryanne lsensee is a native of San Jose, and the daughter of Elias and Frances Archuleta. She attended St. John Vianney elementary and middle school. James Lick High School, and graduated from SJSU with a B.A. in Creative Arts and a minor in Art. She is an active member of California Mini-Corp--a program for tutoring migrant students. She will continue to attend SJSU to earn a multiple subject teaching credential. Robert Beltran................................... B.A. Social Science To the Beltran Family: Thank you Mom and Dad and the rest of my family for your words of encouragement and support. I am proud and thankful of you for helping me overcome some recent hardships in my life. I would not be here today without your support, I love you. Martha Elva Brewer.......................... Stella Navarro....................................... 8.A. Social' Science Stella Navarro is the youngest of nine children. Her parents, retired farm workers, came to the United States in 1966 and Stella is their only American-born child. She is the third in her family to pursue a university degree. Stella largely put herself through school. As she has always had an mtense interest in teaching, she worked for California Mini-Corps throughout her university years. Her experience ranges froin pre-school to eighth grade within four different schools throughout the San Jose area; experience which she will put to good use after she completes her teaching credential program. Stella plans on being a bilingual teacher and to not only help and influence all children, but also repay those who have supported her by giving their children understanding and by becoming a role model to Chicano children. The Chicano Commencement Committee of San Jose 
University proudly welcomes you to the 22nd Annual Graduation

Charlene Marquez-Roybal .............. Masters of Counselor Education 
My name is Charlene Diana Marquez-Roybal. I am thirty-four years old,

Me llamo Jesus, and I would like to make a difference in my 
community. My academic studies have given me a well rounded education. 
However. I see this as only the beginning for I have aspirations of higher 
education. As a Chicano instructor. and hopefully an administrator, I would 
like to be a role model, a motivator, and a positive influence for students, 
especially for my Chicano brothers and sisters. Quiero agradecerles a mi 
abuelita. Aurora Espino, quien me inspiro, a mi familia ya mis amigos 
allegados por su apollo y ayuda en llegar a este nivel de mi educacion.

Stella Navarro....................................... 8.A. Social' Science 
Stella Navarro is the youngest of nine children. Her parents, retired 
farm workers, came to the United States in 1966 and Stella is their only 
American-born child. She is the third in her family to pursue a university 
degree. Stella largely put herself through school. As she has always had an 
mtense interest in teaching, she worked for California Mini-Corps throughout 
her university years. Her experience ranges froin pre-school to eighth grade 
within four different schools throughout the San Jose area; experience which 
she will put to good use after she completes her teaching credential program. 
Stella plans on being a bilingual teacher and to not only help and influence 
all children, but also repay those who have supported her by giving their 
children understanding and by becoming a role model to Chicano children.

Jesus Christ, for giving me the ability to achieve such an accomplishment. I

assistance, to the E.O.P. program for believing in me and providing me with 
this opportunity, and to my parents who supported me throughout my 
endeavors to obtain my B.A. degree. I would also like to say a special thank 
you to my wonderful husband Gary for being understanding and for all of 
his love and support that provided me with that extra push I often needed.

My experiences growing up in New York and living in California have 
taught me one thing: That we must struggle for that advancement of 
"Nuestra Raza." As a physician, I pledge to battle the problems facing 
Latinos in health care. Lastly, my goal is to heal with compassion, caring, 
and humility. I give thanks to my parents, for laying the foundations that 
make the man today. Thanks to the brothers of Gamma Zeta Alpha, for being

Graduating from SJSU with a Political Science degree is one goal I have 
achieved with pride. I would like to thank my parents, William and Juanita, 
and my family for all the love, support, and encouragement throughout the 
years. I would also like to extend a special thank you to my fiance, Dave, 
who gave me the extra encouragement when I needed it. I am such a lucky 
person to have so many who believe in me. The other Chicano 
Commencement Committee members should also be commended for all of 
their time and hard work to make Chicano Commencement happen. Law

As I graduate from San Jose State University I look back on college 
and remember the good along with the bad that helped me through. The 
good includes my friends (you all know who you are), who were support and 
party companions. My family, Tia Luz, Ernesto, Jose , Chamba, Carlos and my 
nieces and nephews. A special thanks to my loving father for the inspiration 
and pride he instilled in me, mi abuelita Carmen por su amor y carino, my 
lovely sister, Julie, for that extra push, and my wonderful mother for 
EVERYTHING. I LOVE YOU ALL, THANK YOU. I hope I can keep making you

Well I made it, but it could have never happened without the support 
of many people who have given me unconditional love, this includes all the

Raymond and Fernando, Hilda and their family. But most important THANK
