XXXII SAN JQSE, CALIFORNIA, WEDNESDAY,  MAY 10, 1944 Number 130  Softball Teams Are Being Formed For Noon Games Under the management of the three male physical education ma-jors in school, a new softball league will be formed just as soon as organizations and individuals submit teams. Phil Clark, Ed Loudon,  and Howard Riddle will be in charge of the league which will play games every Tuesday  and Thursday noon or Monday and  Wednesday noon. Any organization, group,  or in-dividual can enter teams, the  only restriction  being  that they can-not have more than four members of the baseball team which has just completed its season. Teams can be submitted to any of the three men mentioned above, to any one in the Men's P. E. de-partment, or to Sebastian "Scrap-py" Squatrito in the Publications office. A list of the men constituting Use varsity nine will be released tomorrow so that team managers can check against having too many on their club. The first  games are  slated to be underway next week. Cassingham Is Batting King First sacker Jim Cassingham was declared bating king after Coach and official scorekeeper Glenn "Tiny" Hartranft released  the baseball batting figures for the season just completed. Cassingham battered out 11 hits  in 35 trips  to the plate for a .314 average. Phil Clark  was the workhorse in the pitching department work-ing 60 of the 79 innings the Spar-tans played. Jack Maughmer worked in 11 innings, and Ed Loudon toiled for the remaining 8. Clark also had  the most strike -anti, fanning 48 opposing' bats-men while Mangtuner had 14, and  Loudon 3. Clark  also led in the number of free bases given away  21, compared to 11 for Manghmer and  8 for London. NEW BOARD ORGANIZED TO DIRECT  SPARTAN SHOP An eleven member board has been organized to direct  the affairs  of the Spartan Shop (book store and  soda fountain). The  seven faculty members are appointed  by the President of the college  while the four student members are appointed by the Student Council. The present membership  consists of M. D. Wright, chairman; Sarah Dowdle, Dr. Raymond Barry, Dr. W. H. Poytress, Dr. W. H. Myers,  Herbert Sanders  and E. S. Thompson of the State  College faculty.  The student members are Jean Petrinovich, Laura Fear, Gerry Stevens,  and Bill Shapiro.  The purpose of the board,  according to Mr.  Thompson, is to bring the store closer to the students and the faculty to the end that the  store may  serve the needs of the college more effectively. Several meetings have already been held which have been  devoted to a discus-sion of policies.  The matter of used books is one  of the problems that will occupy  the attention of the board in the immediate future. Any suggestions or criticisms in regard to the store or soda foun-tain should be directed to any member of the  board. Only in this way can the problems of the store come  to the attention  of the board. All College "Off  The Record" Dance  To Be Given By SJS Newman  Club  Friday Night From 9 To 12, Announces Chairman An "Off The Record" dance for all college men and women will be given  by the San Jose State college Newman club  on Friday night  from 9 to 12 o'clock at Newman  Hall. Newman  Hall is located  behind the Catholic Women's  Center, at 79 South Fifth street. "This will a good chance for our men and women students to get  together  on a Friday night and have some fun," says Miss Healy. Mrs. Scott Releases Noes Of Joyseers Receiving Diplomas Names of students who will re-ceive their Junior college aca-demic diplomas  in June, 1944, have been released by Mrs. Lillian Scott, assistant to the Dean of Lower DivisionJay Elder. Challenge! 0  Members of the  Publications de-partment challenge the Music de-partment to a game of softball one week from today at 4 o'clock on the San Carlos turf. Teams may  consist of both men and women students, but  there can be no more than five men playing for each team. 'Summerset' Is Soph  Dance Theme  _ _ "Summersert is the theme  cho-sen for the sophomore class dance to be held  on June 3 in the Wom-en's gym. The dance will  be dressy  sport, and bids will be sold. Selec-tion of a band has not  yet  been made, according to council  mem-bers.  Other  activities  the sophomore class is working on include plans for tbe frosh-soph mixer  to be held  May 26, and the council party on June 11. Council members promise the most novel booth  for Spardi Gras. Milt Levy, class president, re-quests attendance at all future  meetings of the group as much work is required on these  activi-ties. Seniors Pre -View Spardi  Gras Program Seniors  jumped and jived dur-ing the orientation  meeting yes-terday as the Basin Street society "gave out" on a few  of their fa-vorite numbers. Giving a monologue on educa-tion, Joanne Hildebrand explained the cases  of A, B, and Z, who were patients of the psychologist who was "bored of education. For the finale, Helen Plant°  sang two selections. This  preview of the Spardi Gras day  program was arranged by Leah  Hardcastle,  entertainment chairman of the festival. ORGANIZATIONS FOR  JO ANN  SWEENEY, PHYLLIS EDWARDS LIVEN CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES WITH HALF-HOUR SHOWS IN QUAD STARTING AT 12 O'CLOCK Starting  the rallies for the Spardi Gras Queen candidates, half-hour show will be staged by the sponsors of Jo Ann  Sweeney at 12 o'clock in the Quad.  At 12:30 o'clock the  Beta Chis and Sappho societies will take over the stage  for Phyllis Edwards.  Miss Sweeney is sponsored by Ero Sophian, AWA,  Spartan Spears, War Veterans, Kappa Sigma Levi  and Mary George Co-op. Thursday rallies  will  be for Audrey Levic  at 12 o'clock, sponsored  by Delta Epsilon  and Smock and  Exam For Senior  Tam; and Gerry  Stevens, spon-sored by Allenians and  Gamma Phi Sigma, at 12:30. English  Majors Set For June 8 The Comprehensive English  ex-amination will  be given on June 8 for all English majors  who plait to graduate In June. Those stu-dents  who did not  take this ex-amination last March are required  to take It at this Ohle.  The foregoing  information was  released  by Dr. Raymond  Barry of the English department.  Dr. Barry recommends all English  majors who wish more information to see him. June  15-19 Is Howdy Week On Campus "Hi, neighbor!" "Howdy, Spartan!" Expressions  like these will be the official  greetings of all true Spartans during "Howdy Week" to be held on campus from June 15 to 19. To wake up what they call "that  dormant good friend's feeling" among the student at San Jose State college," Social Affairs com-mittee members are going to spon-sor a Howdy week during the week of Spardi  Gras. NAME CARDS Name cards on which  students may put their names, addressee, phone numbers, open dates, and any other personal information they want to,  will be given to all student on Monday. Social Affairs committee members will be in the booth by the Library arch all day to hand out the cards. At 12:30 o'clock on Monday a Howdy week rally will be staged in the inner quad. A brass band and plenty  of good entertainment is promised by the committee in charge. CLIMAX Howdy week  will culminate on Friday when all the  students will (Continued  on Page 2) Nominees For SCA Offices Announced Spardi Gras Names of students  nominated for offices in the Student Chris-tian Association  for the coming year were announced In the  re-port of the nominating  committee at the SCA supper last night. Nominee for the post of presi-dent is Mary  Margaret Thomp-son. Sadie Govier and Marilyn Davis are running for the  secre-tary-ship,  and Bob Hudgens and Versa Pitman are vieing for the treasurer's position.  Betty Anne Kelley, Shirley Leek, and  Juel Peters were nominated  for Wom-en's National  Representative, and Shung Fong, Jim Howie,  and Bill Shapiro were named to run for Men's National  Representative.  All members of the SCA who have paid their  dues are eligible to vote and ballots will be avail-able in the SCA office on Wed-nesday. Kappa Kappa Sigma, Phi Kappa  Pi, Zeta  Chi, and Theta Mu Sigma, sponsoring  Mary Lou Montgomery, are planning to present a variety  of entertainment daily at 10 o'clock. ALL SET Milton Levy, assistant  chair-man, announced that the booth framework is being built now bathe Industrial  Arts building and' will be completed before  May 19. The committee in charge of prizes  reports that the prizes  are being secured and that they will be exceptional  this year. All  the traditional  contests  have been planned, which will take place throughout the day. POSTERS  Deadline for the Poster contest has been extended  to May 12. Publicity Chairman  Phil Sykes states that all organizations should  try to enter this contest. "We should all take a part in doing everything we can to promote the carnival day," he said,  "and this is one  of the  best ways of doing it." Posters will be judged mainly on originality  and neatness.  A first prize of $5 and a second of $1.50 will be given on S p a r . d a y . '-"----Juniors Plan Beach Party For May 28 "San Jose State day at the beach"  is the name chosen by the junior council for their sched-uled ASB beach party discussed at a meeting yesterday noon. Ed Louden and Rae Klasson are co-chairmen for the affair, which is to be held at Cowles beach, Santa Cruz, on May 28. The entire student body is invited. There will be a sign-up in the guarlon the Monday preceding the party for those planning to go, and those who can take cars. The juniors plan to rent  trailers for transportation to and from the picnic. Students  attending the  affair are expected  to provide  their own food. DAY EDITOR (This Issue) ED WAITE Poster Publicity In order that more organizations may take part in the Poster con-test, a means of advertising Spardi Gras, the publicity chairman has extended the time. Spardi Gras is one activity in which everyone should participate. Organizations and individuals can best make the carnival day a suc-cess by letting people know about it. This is done through  advertising. Organizations  and individuals not only will be promoting the suc-cess of the  festival day, but they will be helping themselves. A $5 prize and a $1.50 prize will be given for the best poster which  will be labged on originality  and neatness. Now that organizations  have the problems of the Queen contest solved, they should have time for making a poster. The deadline to turn in the posters has  been set for  May 12. At this time all posters should be turned in to the main Art office. The participation in this contest should be as great as any other one. Let's have the organization as well as individuals join in the fun and  spirit. and help make Spardi Graka  success. -  Make a poster for Spardi Gras. Howdy Week  (Continued from  page 1) have an opportunity to get to-gether with  their new friends at the Spardi Gras carnival and dances. Spardi Gras day traditionally starts off with a breakfast  dance, this year to be held in the Student Union. From 6 to 8 o'clock in the morning Spartans may dance  to music off the record and eat food which members of the freshman council will serve. EVENING DANCE In the evening Spartans will again get together for a dance, this time at the regular Spardi Gras dance In the Men's gym. Social Affairs committee members at their meeting yesterday de-cided that Spardi Gras Medleys  is to be the theme of the dance. It's a good thing our boy Jack is  good-natured. And it's more than helpful  that key printer Frankle Rondoni is such a happy guy! Boy does  he build up the morale!    Now that the figurative curtain has come down on Sparta's base-Spring fever  has made its bow on campus and  seems  to have set-tled on the Daily  staff. We're ser-iously ihinking of moving the typewriters to Santa  Cruz. The only drawback is that we can't move our beats there  too. Compensation measures  are  in order, so we'll  probably stage one of the famous staff  parties under a sand dune in the near  future. Now  that hamburger's  off the ra-tion list maybe  we can  have some  food to go with it. Why we have to go to the beach for. a party is questionable. We have a picnic down at the shop every night. starts in the afternoon at 4 o'clock when the printer,  Jack Anderson, buzzes In with the latest  Joke from the Sportsman. He steals out with the copy while his audience searches for some-thing large enough to throw at his head.  The day editor is supposed to get  down to the shop around 7 o'clock so along about 7:30  or 8 he or she waltzes  in with an apology or a new joke for Jack, either  one of which tends to curb his  ire. A half hour later the editor shows up and undoes everything accomplished up ball season, sports accents have turned to tennis, track, swimming, and to softball, of course. Theta Mu Sigma and  the Elev-enth street boys  took over the turf outside the Pub office Mon-day afternoon and staggered through nine innings  to a near tie. The Ten  Men  of Sparta had a number  of varsity diamondinen to hold the squad together. Of course, the Eleventh street boys had "Ski-snoot"  Huck and "Happy"  Hy-man, ace catcher (he says).  The only thing that was missing was Tiny Hartranft's chief morale builder. It's an outright fallacy to believe that Spartan rooters were the ones who spurred the team on to victory. The truth is, it was Ed Marion. Frank Sinatra may be "The Voice," but Marion was the  "Dia-mond Roar." He said he was mere-ly practicing for Speech .2A. His instructor had advised him  to lower his voice, so he went to class with  a hoarse throat. If' our boy Marion's efforts on behalf of the Spartans were any indication of their abilities, they would  have won every game they played. He acted as chief  heckler against the opponents and the um-pire, and almost won  the Acad-emy wardbut dramatic! We're issuing a special invita-tion to him to work for the Pub staff  today in their game  against the Eleventh street outfit. We al-ready know who's going to win.  They've got 10 men on the squad. Including "Ski-snoot."
