Abstract

The SJSU Kazuki Fukuda-Abe Endowed Lecture Series in Contemporary Japanese Arts brings you Dr. Karen M. Fraser. She will present “What is ‘Japanese’ Photography?,” an exploration of a distinctively “Japanese” approach to photography at three key moments in Japanese photographic history, represented via the work of 19th century commercial photographers Kusakabe Kimbei and Ogawa Kazumasa, the early 20th century Pictorialist Fukuhara Shinzō, and postwar artist Tōmatsu Shōmei. Karen M. Fraser is Assistant Professor of Asian art in the Department of Art and Art History at Santa Clara University.
