Mr. LYoN, froe1 the Committee on Indian Affairs, made the following REPORT: The Committee on Indian Affairs, to which was referred the petition of Joshua Pitcher, report: That the petitioner was appointed sub-agent for the Sioux Indians of the Missouri river ; and states that his agency was surrounded by Indians 8peaking three different languages. That he employed an interpreter who understood the language of all the Indians with whom he had intercourse, at a salary of four hundred and eighty dollars per annum. The act of June, 1834, fixes the salary of an interpreter at three hundred dollars per annum, and a further sum of one hundred dollars js authorized to be paid to an additional interpreter, if occasion should require: but there is a provision in the law referred to, that no person shall hold more than one office under it at the same time. The interpreter employed by the petitioner having discharged the duty for which the additional sum of one hundred dollars is authorized to be allowed, the committee consider it reasonable and just that he should receive the amount of one hundred dollars in addition to the salary fixed by law, and report a bill authorizing this additional allowance in the settlement of his accounts.
