Virtual schooling is a type of educational instruction that is delivered partially or completely through virtual technology, as opposed to a brick and mortar school. In Ontario, virtual schooling became a required part of the high-school curriculum in March 2019. This use escalated exponentially when, in March 2020, in-person schools across the province and the globe were forced to emergency switch to virtual schooling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If virtual schooling becomes a normalized part of Ontario high-school students’ experiences in the post-pandemic world, new policies will have to be created. Research shows that school principals are the strongest influence on school policy implementation and success. By exploring how school principals understand equity in virtual schooling, gaps in understanding may be revealed. These understandings and gaps may help to inform more equitable virtual school policies.
