In SouthAsian countries, there has been a rapidincrease in stroke mortality and preva-lence of hypertension (2). Influenced byother stroke registries of the world (3,4), we started a stroke registry in 2004 torecord the type and severity of stroke,risk factor patterns and the functionaloutcome in patients with stroke. Wedid a prospective observational study,conducted from 2004 to 2007 in theDepartment of Neurology, Liaquat Na-tional Hospital. All patients admittedwith the clinical features of stroke wereenrolled. Diagnosis was confirmed onCT/MRI findings. A standard question-nairewas completed for every patient byinterviewing the patient and or atten-dant/relative. A total of 500 patientswere enrolled. Out of these, 296(592%) were males and 204 (408%)were females. Mean age of male was5887123 years and female was6007132 years, with a significant pro-portion of patients in young age groupi.e. 164%. Hypertension was present in401 (802%) patients, 189 (378%) werediabetic, 147 (294%) had ischaemicheart disease, 332 (664%) were dyslipi-daemic and 118 (236%) were smokers.Majority of the patients 369 (738%)had ischaemic while 131 (262%)had intracerebral haemorrhage. Outof ischaemic stroke, 53(106%) hadlarge vessel disease (LVD), 46 (92%)had cardioembolic (CE), 182 (364%)had small vessel disease, 57 (114%) hadundetermined and 31 (62%) had othertype of stroke according to the TOASTclassification (5). Significant extracra-nial stenosis was present in 24 (107%)patients, while intracranial stenosis wasobserved in 56 (184%) patients. Onadmission, nearly half of the patients(50%)were totally bed boundwithGOSof 2, 3 andmRSof 5 (548%)while at thetime of discharge 68% were indepen-dent with GOS of 4, 5 and mRS up to 3.Hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemiaand smoking are the most prevalentmodifiable risk factors in our cohort.Hospital-based stroke registries serve asa data bank that helps in providing amethod for establishing a valuable clin-ical research data resource (see Fig. 1).Farrukh S.
