Beliefs are hard to pin down. Whether or not they are successfullytranslated into practice, they give important indications of intentions forthe future. The “IMAP web-based beliefs survey” was developed in orderto assess beliefs about the teaching and learning of mathematics held byprospective elementary teachers (IMAP 2003). This survey gathers databy asking teachers to respond to video clips and teaching scenarios intheir own words. The study reported here investigated beliefs held bythree newly qualified secondary teachers. In particular the aim was toevaluate the IMAP survey in the secondary context by comparing it withthe alternative data collection methods of interview and observation.Results indicate the general effectiveness of the IMAP survey forassessing the beliefs of such teachers
