The COVID 19 pandemic has created innovative opportunities that allow you to engage in work focused EE remotely and you will hear from a student and employer participating in a remote internship.   Work focused EE provides you with hands-on work experience specific to your academic discipline. This can include placements, internships, or co-op experiences. Many employers continue to offer these opportunities during the pandemic, but in most cases, you would work from your living space instead of physically working at the employer’s office space.   Let’s hear from a student and employer who are participating in work focused EE.  Hi, my name is Temitope Omidiji, I’m an accomplished finance professional with over 7 years of experience managing both personal and commercial credits back home in Nigeria. I joined Schulich IMBA in 2019, mainly because of its potential at helping me to launch my career in Canadian financial services. By March of 2020, I had secured 3 interviews with top Canadian banks to intern with them in the summer. However, those interviews were cancelled because of the COVID 19 crisis and by April I heard about the Schulich Pycap initiative which was designed to help businesses to survive through the COVID 19 crisis. I joined as a Finance and Business Analyst and at Pycap, I helped to create solutions for business to help them survive through the crisis and I believe the skills I have gained are highly transferable to my future career in Canadian financial services. Hello, my name is Stuart Browne, and I am the CEO of the venture capital firm called Pycap Venture Partners and during the summer of 2020, we hired a number of interns from the Schulich School of Business but of course this year it was quite different given that there was a pandemic. So obviously this meant we couldn’t work from our office, we couldn’t have regular board room meetings, and this poised a bit of a challenge. But, you know, I was very happy to see that all of our interns had a strong work ethic and were able to overcome this challenge through great, you know, teamwork and team building skills. So, in addition to working for us through this pandemic situation, they also had a really amazing experience. They got exposure in terms of working directly with the CEO’s of companies that were in the Fintech, Agtech, Construction Technology and Clean Tech industries and not only did they get exposure to, you know, the inner working of these industries and learn a ton by working with these CEO’s, but they also had the experience of helping entrepreneurs navigate through an economic crisis, which is obviously quite rare. So, you know, heaven forbid the next economic crisis that hits, they will have on their resumes experience in helping these companies uncover new revenue streams, access sources of capital from government, and investors and a whole ton of other opportunities that they were able to have as a result of working at Pycap. Community focused EE provides you with the opportunity to connect course material with experiences outside of the classroom and through interactions with partners in the community. Despite the ongoing pandemic, community partners are looking for your help finding solutions to their evolving needs, whether you provide a direct service to their clients virtually or engage in a research or marketing project remotely, you can apply course content while providing meaningful support to a community partner.     Let’s hear from Maureen, a student completing a community focused capstone project as she shares challenges and opportunities from her community focused EE going remote.    Maureen Kizito, Student, Business & Society: During the pandemic, my community focused capstone project had to move online. No physical visits to the company, in normal times, I would have visited the company and I would have had some of my placement hours done at the company location. The challenges internet connection, distance and Zoom meeting times were a challenge for group work. Working on a capstone project that’s abroad was an opportunity in the pandemic. In normal times, the company had to be in Toronto, it had to have its physical location in Toronto not abroad. Overall, my remote experience in any context has been good. No traffic delays to get to class, everything is done in the comfort of my home, that’s my experience so far with going remote at York University 2020.  This student testimonial is © York University. Most of your courses will have classroom focused EE opportunities, even with most of your courses online this year. This can include an online presentation from a guest speaker, using Zoom or Microsoft Teams to engage in a role play with your peers, analyzing case studies of real-world experiences or participating in a virtual simulation. Occasionally, classroom focused EE can occur outside of the classroom as a one-off activity such as a virtual field trip to a site that is relevant to your course or a remote informational interview with a professional in your field.   Let’s hear from Dr. Mark Terry, Course Director of Introduction to Environmental Documentaries as he shares his experience implementing field trips into his course.   Dr. Mark Terry, Course Director, ENVS 1010: What I did with the students is I would find an exhibit at a museum or a film with the film maker present that they could physically attend and engage with. But of course, because of the pandemic, going outside and gathering in crowds was no longer possible. So the alternative that I came up with was something called a virtual field trip and what I did there was I scheduled two films, coincidentally films that I made in my previous career as a film marker, documentary film maker, and one was set in Antarctica, called the Antarctica Challenge a Global Warning, and one was set in the Artic, called the Polar Explorer.  And what we did is I showed both films, and had the students take a break in between, and then after the screenings I came on Zoom and in the form of a Q & A that’s very common at film festivals, I was able to take the questions of the students. So I talked about how the films were made, why they were made, what kind of impact they had, not just on audiences, but also on the United Nations. And that was my virtual field trip to the ends of the earth so that’s how we got around not being able to go outside and meet in person.   This Faculty testimonial is © York University.
