Hard disk drives (HDDs) are used as secondary storage in a number of digital
electronic devices owing to low cost (<0.1\/GBat2016prices)andlargedatastoragecapacity(10TBwitha3.5inchHDD).Duetotheexponentiallyincreasingamountofdata,thereisaneedtoincreasearealstoragedensitiesbeyond\sim1Tb/in^2.Thisrequiresthethicknessofcarbonovercoats(COCs)tobe<2nm.Friction,wear,corrosion,andthermalstabilityarecriticalconcerns<2nm,wheremostoftheprotectivepropertiesofcurrentCOCsarelost.ThislimitscurrenttechnologyandrestrictsCOCintegrationwithheatassistedmagneticrecordingtechnology(HAMR),sincethisalsorequireslaserirradiationstability.Hereweshowthatgrapheneβbasedovercoatscanovercomealltheselimitations.2β4layersofgrapheneenabletwoβfoldreductioninfrictionandprovidebettercorrosionandwearthanstateβofβtheβartCOCs.Asinglegraphenelayerisenoughtoreducecorrosion\sim2.5times.WealsoshowthatgraphenecanwithstandHAMRconditions.Thus,grapheneβbasedovercoatscanenableultrahigharealdensityHDDs>10Tb/in^2$
