The term jazz can refer to a style of music, or the factthat jazz musicians love to add their own stamp to the melodies(to "jazz it up a bit"), or it can refer to music that is improvised(created or composed spontaneously). Some people disagreeabout whether or not a particular performer or piece of musicshould or should not be considered jazz. Some people thinkthat jazz skill is somehow inherent and cannot be learned, evenif they cannot say why that would be. We believe that jazz is teachable and learnable, and that it isimportant to demonstrate the fundamental aspects of jazz thatmake it unique from any other music: its swinging rhythms,syncopation, personality and deep blues feeling. As aspiringeducators, we want to teach these things in a way that is funand engaging to children because we hope to build apassionate audience for the music we love so much. This concert was inspired primarily by a 1956 album bycomposer/conductor/educator Leonard Bernstein that wassimply called "What Is Jazz?" Bernstein loved and respectedjazz and the musicians who made it, and he clearly enjoyedteaching young people about it. In addition to a long careerspent composing and conducting the New York PhilharmonicOrchestra, Bernstein regulary gave performances andpresentations for young people. Even though he passed awayin 1990, Bernstein's remarkable efforts in educating youngaudiences still reap rewards today.We hope your family loves the music and returns to ourcampus often to hear more.
