Architecture - e-ﬂux conversat…https://conversations.e-ﬂux.com/t/superhumanity-conversations-jon-goodbun-responds-to-daniel-birnbaum-and-sven-olov-wallenstein-spatial-thought/6033 3/7and expreTTioniTt art which iT a rehaTh of the catchphraTeT of the twentieT aT if nothinghad happened in the intervening fortZ ZearT.” ImportantlZ, for Colquhoun, thiT meanTthat the Pompidou waT formed around a douCle contradiction. FirTtlZ, it waT aninTtitution performing the cultural taTkT of the hiTtorical CourgeoiT Ceaux-art thatadopted the avant-garde and populiTt Ttance. #ut TecondlZ, and perhapT moreimportantlZ, within the conception of the avant-garde itTelf waT an unreTolvedcontradiction in itT deTire to create a new human TuCject CZ giving form to forceT—ofmodernization—that deTtroZ the poTTiCilitZ of an autonomouT human TuCject.In the eTTaZ, Colquhoun demonTtrateT how the unique deTign propoTal developed CZRichard RodgerT and Renzo Piano further  gureT and intenTi eT theTe iTTueT in waZTthat are important for our underTtanding of the ImmaterialT. NotaClZ, he argueT that CZorganizing the Cuilding around a paradoxicallZ functionaliTt conception of radical exiCilitZ and tranTparencZ, the architectT TuggeTt that it iT not poTTiCle to give directformal expreTTion or mediation to anZ conception of culture. ThiT left onlZ the CuildingTerviceT and movement of people aT material for architectural expreTTion, and“according to the Tchematic plan, human circulation and the movement of mechanicalTZTtemT Celong to the Tame categorZ.” In the Tame geTture, it’T noted that theproduction of an interior landTcape of  exiCilitZ demandT “the invention of a new kindof Cureaucrat—the programmer.” Re ecting at variouT pointT upon what all of thiTmeanT with reTpect to the poTTiCilitZ of architecture to give form to, and to aTTert the“poTitive valueT” of modernization, Colquhoun concludeT that we are confronted with aCuilding determined CZ:two fundamental deciTionT: that the Cuilding Thould Ce conceived of aT a well-Terviced Thed and that itT TZmColiTm Thould Ce concerned with itT mechanicalTupport TZTtemT. The  rTt haT reTulted in too Tchematic an interpretation of theCrief … the Tecond haT reTulted in a Cuilding which idealizeT proceTT to theexcluTion of anZ idea of what thiT ‘proceTT’ Thould Ce aimed. #oth deciTionTpreTuppoTe that ‘culture’ iT an aCTolute which cannot Ce mediated CZ anZ  nal formand that itT achievement muTt Ce inde nitelZ poTtponed. If thiT were true, alllanguage, not onlZ that of architecture, would Ce impoTTiCle.What then, iT meant CZ “the immaterial” in LZotard’T exhiCition, aTTociated textT andideaT? We muTt Ttart CZ Ttating that the immaterial iT not the non-material, the virtualor the aCTtract, or at leaTt not in anZ Timple TenTe. In fact, if we are to uTe Tingle termTfrom the CinarZ pairT of weTtern enlightenment thought—where matter iT foundback to e-flux.com7/17/2017 Superhumanity conversations: Jon Goodbun responds to Daniel Birnbaum and Sven-Olov Wallenstein, "Spatial Thought" -
