FROM THE OFFICES OF THE ALTERNATIVES 
FOR INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT 
The entire staff of the A.I.D. Program would like to welcome you to 
our college. 
A college education is still one of the most viable means of upward 
mobility in our society. This opportunity has been provided for you through 
the sacrifices and commitments of brothers and sisters of our best endeavors. 
Those of you who have never had the opportunity but had dedicated to the hope 
that some day you and I may be able to meet at the institute of higher 
learning. 
Your future at this college depends on you and what you are willing 
to sacrifice to obtain those goals that you venture for today. As I wel-
come you, I encourage you to continue to give your best so that you will 
receive the best. 
Salem is not a utopia; there are many problems and frustrations; however, 
few things come without a struggle. The staff of the program is here to 
assist you in the struggle, and to be part of your victories and defeats. 
We are advocates in this strange and sometimes hostile environment. Rely 
on us for we rely on you. 
Good luck as you embark on in this experience that I hope, not only 
you will profit from, but also those who will follow in your footsteps!

AFRICAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION SALEM STATE COLLEGE 
To In-Coming Freshmen and Transfer Students, we are the African Student 
Organization on campus. We would like to introduce ourselves at this time. 
Our purpose in writing this letter of introduction is to invite you 
to participate in programs sponsored by the African Student Association and 
also to inform you on the ten (10) student organizations on Campus. 
We encourage all students to be active members and support in one 
of the eleven (11) student organizations to better not only racial rela-
tions on Campus, but social relations among these student organizations. 
This is a year of highly intensified political awareness and if we 
organize correctively we will all come to find the common denominator.

GOALS & PURPOSES 
The African Student Association was founded in 1968 by a group of 
African students who felt that their individual and group expectation of this 
institution were not being fulfilled. Over the years, the Organization has supported 
its members when deemed necessary and facilitated a higher degree of black awareness. 
The purpose of the African Student Association shall be to provide a sense of 
unity and cohesiveness among the Black student at Salem State College. The African 
Student Association sees it as its goal, the primary source of information in respect 
to all aspects of Black aware.ness. The nature of this organization shall be direct~d 
toward the total growth and personality of each African student's life on this campus . 
Beyond the realm of the academic we recognize specific and general goals that affect 
the life of the African student. Therefore, we see our organization as dealing 
creatively with all expectations for achieving a quality education. As much, we will 
concern ourselves with the cultural, economic, political and spiritual well being 
of the African student. In this capacity, we see ourselves as a ligitimate resource 
for those seeking knowledge of the African experience. Our purpose will include 
research and dissemination of relevant data dealing with human development of a more 
productive and creative society. Our purpose is not only to fulfill the African 
student's needs on this campus, but to include the entire campus population including 
all other student organizations and student alike. We are located on the second 
floor of the college Union in Room# Please feel free to drop by any time. We 
are looking forward to seeing you.

ALTERNATIVES FOR INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT 
SALEM STATE COLLEGE 
GENERAL INFORMATION 
The Alternatives for Individual Development Program 
(formerly Minority Affairs Program) was begun in January 
of 1973 under the leadership of the Director of Minority 
Affairs, Mr. Arthur T. Gerald, Jr. Initially the pro-
gram's sole purpose was to meet the social and psycho-
logical needs of the increased numbers of minority 
students at Salem State College. 
The Alternatives for Individual Development Program 
has the following components - an Advisory Board; Out-
reach, which is involved in recruiting students and in 
comnrunity relations; a Coordinator of Counseling 
Services; and a Learning Center (coordinated by the 
Assistant Director of the Program). 
LEARNING CENTER 
The Learning Center, located on the 4th floor of the 
library, is a multimedia resource facility designed to 
meet the increased need for individualized instruction 
in developmental work, enrichment, and as a complement 
to regular course work in the various academic areas. 
The Learning Center is open Monday through Friday 
from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Monday through Thursday 
from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p. m. Appointments can be arranged 
by calling 745-0556, extension 462, 463 or by dropping by 
the center. 
A.I.D. PROGRAM 
Arthur T. Gerald, Jr., Director of Alternatives for 
Individual Development. Education: Lincoln University, 
B.A. Berkshire Christian College, M.T.S. Gordon Conwell 
Theological Seminary. Description: The Director is 
responsible for the coordination, development, direction 
and implementation of the AID Program. 
Gwen Rosemond, Assistant Director of Alternatives for 
Individual Development. Education: B.S. Bowling Green 
University, M.A. Bowling Green University, Ohio Univer-
sity Graduate College. Description: The Assistant 
Director provides an extension of the services of the 
Director with special emphasis on the Learning Center 
and academic programs. 
Janet Robinson, Counselor, Alternatives for Individual 
Development. Education: B.A. Albertus Magnus College, 
M.A. Suffolk University. Description: The Counselor 
provides counseling services for AID students. 
Judy Sanford, Coordinator of Conununity Outreach, 
Alternatives for Individual Development. 
Education: A.B. Brown University, Ed.M. Boston 
College. Description: The Outreach Coordinator 
coordinates and develops all programs as they 
relate to the conununity.

BLACK STUDIES PROGRAM MEMBERS 
The Black Studies Program, which offers a Minor 
in Black Studies, was approved and inaugurated in 
the summer of 1974. The program in interdepartmental 
in nature. The courses are offered jointly in their 
respective departments and under the auspices of the 
Black Studies Program. 
The Black Studies courses are open to all stu-
dents. To minor in Black Studies a person needs to 
take any four (4) courses and the SO 412, Seminar/ 
Directed Study in Black Studies. The central goal 
of the program is to heighten our student's aware-
ness of the Afro-American's contributions to the 
United States. While built on a sound academic 
base, the program has not hestitated to tackle con-
troversial issues.
