Given the current context of lack of economic opportunities for women, this paper examines women’s empowerment in relation to their work in the tourism sector. The research studies the case of family-owned Bed and Breakfast establishments in the town of Tonatico, State of Mexico, and describes women’s level of empowerment as a result of their participation in this sub-sector of the lodging industry. The study employs a qualitative method with a gender perspective analysis. Data was obtained from twenty establishments where forty three women participate. The measurement of empowerment considers a total of seven factors following Hernández and García (2008), and Davis and Newstron (2004). Empowerment levels were ranked according to the obtained score into: high, medium and low. Finally, the study concludes that there is a level of empowerment for women regardless of their occupational profile or educational level. This work is a first approach to the topic studied in the countryEl presente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar la situación de la mujer que participa en el mercado laboral del sector turístico, enfocándose a su empoderamiento. El caso de estudio se centra en Tonatico, Estado de México, donde se describe el nivel de empoderamiento de las mujeres que laboran en los establecimientos de hospedaje conocidos como Posadas Familiares. Para poder desarrollar dicha investigación se utilizó un enfoque cualitativo, analizándolo desde la perspectiva de género. Los datos fueron obtenidos de veinte posadas familiares donde participaron cuarenta y tres mujeres, incluyendo a dueñas y trabajadoras de los establecimientos. El nivel de empoderamiento se explica a partir de un total de siete factores de acuerdo a Hernández y García (2008) yDavis y Newstron (2004); éstos se clasificaron de acuerdo al nivel de frecuencia, dividiéndolos en los rangos alto, mediano y bajo; se pudo constatar que sí, existe un nivel de empoderamiento en las mujeres, independientemente de su perfil ocupacional y educativo.
