Conservative management of pelvic organ prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common female problem which is defined as the symptomatic descent of the walls or apex of the vagina. Symptoms of a vaginal bulge or protrusion, pelvic heaviness, bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction are often associated with the problem. Treatments include surgery and conservative management. Conservative approaches to the treatment of prolapse are often used in cases of mild to moderate prolapse; for those who wish to have more children; the frail or those unwilling to undergo surgery; and those awaiting surgery. This article describes the conservative methods available to women presenting with pelvic organ prolapse including lifestyle advice, pelvic floor muscle training and vaginal pessaries
