Poisoning is considered to be one of the main home accidents in the age group of 1-5 years. The accidents have relations with facilitated situations, family’s way of life, cultural habits and children’s characteristics. This study was carried out to learn the family’s behavior facing the poisoning of a child, interpreting their social and cultural context. Ethnographic approach was used as methodology. Eight families who had their children poisoned were studied. The children, in the age group of 1-5 years were taken care at a public hospital located in Fortaleza. Through the cultural domains and taxonomic analysis, the study’s cultural theme emerged as No mother wants anything to happen to her child. The ethnographic findings were analyzed with the Transcultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory, understanding the World View and the dimensions of the cultural and social structures influence on the study meanings. The authors understand that is essential for a nursing team to plan and develop their care in harmony with a human and social-cultural context.A intoxicação exógena é um dos principais acidentes domésticos em menores de 5 anos. Está interligada às situações facilitadoras, ao estilo de vida da família, aos hábitos culturais e as fases da criança. Este estudo teve como objetivo, conhecer o comportamento dessa família frente à intoxicação exógena na criança, interpretando o seu contexto sociocultural. Utilizamos a abordagem etnográfica como metodologia. Foram estudadas oito famílias, de crianças intoxicadas, na faixa de 1 a 5 anos, atendidas em um hospital público, da Cidade de Fortaleza. Mediante a análise de domínios culturais e taxonômica, o tema cultural do estudo emergiu como sendo Nenhuma mãe quer que aconteça nada com seu filho. Estes achados etnográficos foram analisados à luz da Teoria da Diversidade e Universalidade Cultural do Cuidado, relacionando a influência da visão de mundo e das dimensões das estruturas cultural e social no conjunto de significados revelados pelas famílias. Entendemos que seja fundamental que a equipe de enfermagem planeje e desenvolva o seu cuidado em harmonia do ser humano e contexto sociocultural
