WATER POLUTION IN UKRAINE

An industrial country, Ukraine some of the most polluted water resource 
in Eastern Europe. 
The problem of water pollution is associated with increased 
consumption of water by industry, agriculture and public utilities, low 
government priority and defilement of water sources.  
 In Ukrainian inland water resources, the maximum and average 
concentration of some pollutants is very high, it reaches 61.52 percent, and 
the number of accidents involving heavy pollution (one waste water 
discharge, which can cause a health hazard) is increasing. Meanwhile, the 
change of the centrally planned economy in the free market is associated 
with a severe economic downturn and a significant drop in industry. 
However, a complex analysis of problems was not conducted, which are 
interconnected with water pollution and socioeconomic situation in the 
period 1991-2003. It is unlikely that much effort can be made at the state 
level in the near future to improve water quality. Something enhancement 
can be reached through changes in the system of pollution control and 
public perception, as well as obtaining appropriate expertise and 
investments from abroad. 
The main measures to reduce the degree of water pollution are: 
 sewage treatment; 
 use of sewage for irrigation; 
 introduction of closed water supply technologies; 
 reduction of volumes of pollutant discharge in the reservoir 
improvement of technological processes; 
 the standardization of water quality, that is, the development of 
criteria for its suitability for different types of water use. 
All natural reservoirs are capable of self-cleaning. However, the ability 
of the reservoir to self-purification has its limits. Today there is such a huge 
amount of contaminated sewage that this process can not occur. 
Therefore, the restoration of water resources will only take place if there 
is an effective organizational and legal system, the formation of protected 
areas and improvement of methods for monitoring and evaluation of the 
status of water objects, the introduction of paid water consumption, taking 
into account the composition and properties of waste water.
