Screening of Human T-lymphotropic Virus in Voluntary Blood Donors in an Endemic Area

Abstract

In order to evaluate the blood screening of human T-lymphotropic virus(HTLV) infection in endemic regions in China,a total of 32 767 voluntary blood donors in Xiamen during February 2004 to February 2005 were tested for anti-HTLV Ⅰ/Ⅱ using an ELISA kit. Those repeatedly positive samples were further confirmed by Western blot and PCR.Thirteen donors were positive for antiHTLV by ELISA and 7 among them were confirmed by Western blot, while one was doubtful.HTLV I env gene fragments from four confirmed samples were amplified successfully by PCR.Phylogenetic analysis showed that they were all grouped into subtype C.None of the seven confirmed donors came from Xiamen City, but from other areas of Fujian Province.Five of these 7 donors came from the coastal area of Fujian Province, while the other two came from inland area
