This presentation drew on theories of academic resilience and fear of failure to explain the absence of boys from singing activities. Evidence from the AHRC funded Boys Keep Singing project was drawn upon to demonstrate that behind a macho facade that posits singing as a "gay" or "feminine" activity lies a fear of failure in many boys when confronted by feminine competence. The paper explored the consequences for gender justice as well as the wider implications of certain classes of boys' lack of resilience when faced with academic challenges
