IAS Members Who Teach K-6 The new Elementary Science Teaching Section of the Iowa Academy of Science has now been formed with advantages for K-6 teachers who affiliate. These advantages include a news bulletin, special program activities and membership rates. Some K-6 teachers who are IAS members may not be identified as such in the records of the academy. In order to guarantee benefits of the new section, please identify yourself by sending a note on school stationery to the /AS executive director indicating that you teach K-6 and would like to be affiliated with the Elementary Science Teaching Section. All members of the Iowa Science Teachers Section of the Iowa Academy of Science are invited to offer a proposal to present a paper or workshop at the annual fall conference of the ISTS. The 1987 conference will be held October 29 in Cedar Rapids. To make a proposal, call or write your regional director or one of the officers of ISTS and give your name and the topic you wish to have considered for presentation. As conference plans are made, you will be contact-ed by the conference committee and given information concerning the accept-ance of your proposal and guidelines for presenters. The ISTS Executive Committee wishes to encourage members from all teaching levels and with varied topic interests to make presentations. Conference presenters are not required to pay the usual conference registration fees. -C.W.B. "Astronomy As A Hobby" Packet Available from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific A new nontechnical information packet on becoming involved with astronomy as a hobby has just been published by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. This 28-page booklet contains useful information for the beginner, or for the harried classroom teacher whose astronomy background is limited. It contains a brief glossary of terms, a "tour" of the universe, information on what astronom-ers do, an excellent essay on human kind's place in the universe, information on the selection of binoculars for sky-gazing, and a basic library list. Its· reading level is suitable for interested high school students.
