This issue of M aine History features stories of Maine men and women -  a river driver, a Civil War soldier, a brotherhood of dock work­ers, and a fictional herbalist and all-around keeper of M aine’s history -  who capture the spirit o f M aine’s past in gendered ways. Masculine characteris­tics, like a test o f skill and bravado, an ordeal stoically endured, a united ef­fort to protect pay and prestige, contrast with Sarah Orne Jewett’s characteri­zation o f the women o f Dunnet Landing, who display a sense of quiet confidence and dignity rarely found in the written annals of Maine history.
