Use of snippets/material from others should be kept to a minimum and the source should be accredited where applicable. Overview: This course will discuss concepts and implementation of a web application covering the frontend, backend, and data layers. Topics will range from markup and styling using HTML5 and CSS3, frontend/client-side scripting using JavaScript and jQuery (with usage of AJAX), backend/server-side scripting using PHP running on Apache, and data storage using MySQL. This course will be mostly hands-on with a milestone approach for a final project. Class participation and questions are strongly encouraged. GIT will be heavily used for recording work and submitting assignments on Canvas.  Assignments: Generally there will be small coding samples to go over in class where there will be lab/class time to practice. Most assignments will have grading that'll fall under participation. There will be a semester long project the you'll incrementally develop as you learn new topics. This project will be agreed upon based on a submitted and discussed proposal. The milestones will check on progress and see if any special topics need focus. Anything including and beyond any reach goal may be considered for extra credit.  Illustrative Schedule The schedule is a guideline and is subject to change to fit the particular instance of the class. All topics in general are planned to be covered. Some may have more focus than others and per class interest other topics may be included. Week 1: Overview of Class / Environment Setup / GIT Intro / PHP Intro Week 2: DB Connectivity / SQL / PHP integration Week 3: PHP Topics for User Registration / Login, Project Intro/Discussion Week 4: PHP Sessions and Cookies / PHP Function Design / Project Proposal Finalization Week 5: JavaScript topics, debugging, and user-defined functions / Project Milestone 1 Week 6: HTML5 / HTML 5 Canvas  Week 7: SQL Design / Joins, Project Milestone 2 Week 8: Midterm, Project Assistance Week 9: PHP Sessions Continued / Best Practices Updates Week 10: JavaScript Dynamic HTML, data validation, HTML5 patterns, Project Milestone 3 Week 11: Security Topics (User Input, SQL Injection, XSS) Week 12: jQuery Intro and AJAX Week 13: jQuery Continued, Project Milestone 4 Week 14: Guided development on Projects / Project Wrap up Week 15: Final   Grading: Exams / Tests will be graded out of 100 points. Projects / Assignments will be graded on a scale of 0.0 - 5.0, there may be some opportunities for up to 6.0. This scale can also be decimals between the whole numbers, but in general the grading schema is as follows: 0 Didn’t do anything / No understanding / Comprehension 1 Submitted something relevant / Less than Minimal Understanding / Comprehension 2 Submitted partial requirements / Minimal Understanding / Comprehension 3 Submitted partial requirements (more so than a 2) / Basic Understanding / Comprehension 4 Serious attempt was made but missed criteria / Moderate Understanding / Comprehension 5 All requirements met without issues / Good Understanding / Comprehension 6 Reserved for Extra Effort / Above and Beyond Proof of Understanding / Comprehension All points will be converted to a final percentage at the end of the semester.  Grading Breakdown: Milestones: 25% 35% (+10% from Final Exam) Project Proposal: 5% Midterm: 15% Final Project: 25% 35% (+10% from Final Exam) Final Exam: 20% (removed in favor of more practical examination and due to remote proctoring issues) Participation/Attendance: 5% Assignments: 5% (added, missed recording this in initial syllabus but added it to Canvas version on first day))  Grading Scale: A  100 % to 89.5% B+  < 89.5 % to 84.5% B  < 84.5 % to 79.5% C+  < 79.5 % to 74.5% C  < 74.5 % to 69.5% D+  < 69.5 % to 64.5% D  < 64.5 % to 59.5% F  < 59.5 % to 0.0%   Materials/Technology: AFS / AFS Client PHP Online Resources (No book required) GitHub AnyConnect VPN PHP My Admin   Late Policy: General Assignments will have 5% deducted for each day late.  Projects/larger assignments will have 20% deducted for each day late. Missed Exams/Quizzes will result in a 0. If you are going to miss a class and cannot hand in an assignment, it’s your responsibility to let me know. There also will be no make-up exams (except, at the discretion of the instructor in the case of a documented medical or family emergency).
