Abstract
The long pepper (Piper hispidinervum C. DC.) constitutes a plant species native and exclusive from Acre River Valley, Northwestern Brazil. The plant produces leaves containing essential oil composed of several substances, being safrole the major constituent. This paper reports the results of a preliminary evaluation of the biomass production and safrole content in long pepper plants with 14 months of growth, established in experimental plantation located at three altitudes (13m, 57m and 390m) in the Itajaí Valley. In the Lower and Middle Valley average yield of dry leaves (5087.94kg / ha) were obtained which was higher than those recorded in Acre. The content of essential oil in the Lower Valley (4.75%) was higher than the mean values observed in Northern Brazil (3.04%). The percentage of safrole in essential oil did not vary between the regions of Itajaí (average 72.31%). The higher productivity of safrole (160.43kg / ha) was obtained in the Lower Valley of Itajaí.A pimenta-longa (Piper hispidinervum C. DC.) consttui-se numa espécie vegetal originária e exclusiva do Vale do Rio Acre, região noroeste do Brasil. A planta produz, nas folhas, óleo essencial composto por diversas substâncias, sendo safrol o consttuinte majoritário. Neste trabalho são relatados resultados de uma avaliação preliminar da produção de biomassa e de safrol em plantas de pimenta-longa com 14 meses de crescimento, estabelecidas em plantos experimentais localizados emtrês alttudes no Vale do Itajaí, 13m, 57m e 390m. No Baixo e Médio Vale foram obtidas produtividades médias de matéria seca das folhas (5.087,94kg/ha) maiores do que as registradas no Acre. O teor de óleo essencial na região do Baixo Vale (4,75%) foi maior do que os valores médios observados na região Norte do Brasil (3,04%). O percentual de safrol no óleo essencial não variou entre as regiões do Vale do Itajaí (média de 72,31%). A maior produtvidade de safrol (160,43kg/ha) foi obtda na região do Baixo Vale do Itajaí
