TRANSLATIONS  Viens! et que le regard des pudiques étoiles Qui tombe sur la terre à travers tant de voiles, Que l’arbre pénétré de parfums et de chants, Que le soufflé embrasé de midi dans les champs, Et l’ombre et le soleil et l’onde et la verdure, Et le rayonnement de toute la nature Fassent épanouir, comme une double fleur, La beauté sur ton front et l’amour dans ton Coeur!  Come, and may the gaze of the chaste stars Which falls upon the earth through so many veils, May the tree, penetrated with scents and songs, May the blazing breath of noon in the fields, And shadow and sun, water and  greenery,  And the radiance of all nature Make, like a double flower, Beauty blossom on your forehead and love in your heart Haï luli!  Je suis triste, je m’inquiète, Je ne sais plus que devenir. Mon bon ami devait venir, Et je l’attends ici seulette. Haï luli! Où donc peut être mon ami?  Je m’assieds pour filer ma laine, Le fil se casse dans ma main… Allons, je filerai demain; Aujourd’hui je sui strop en peine! Haï luli! Qu’il fait triste sans son ami!   Si jamais il devient volage, S’il doit un jour m’abandonner, Le village n’a qu’à brûler, Et moi-même avec le village! Haï luli! A quoi von vivre sans ami? .  Ah, alas!  I am sad, I worry,  I know not what more will come. My good friend ought to come and I await him here alone. Ah, alas!  Where indeed can be my friend?  I sit down to spin my wool,  The thread breaks in my hand…  Let’s go, I will spin tomorrow; Today I am in too much pain! Ah, alas! How sad it is without my friend!  If ever he becomes fickle, if he were ever to abandon me one day, the village has but to burn, and myself with the village! Ah, alas!  What good is it to live without a friend? Parted for a moment from my sweet treasure non vivo, non moro, ma provo il tormento d’un viver penoso, d’un lungo morir. I do not live, I do not die,  I feel only the torment of a painful life,  of a long death. Der Tag ging sturmbewegt und regenschwer, Auf allen Gräbern fror das Wort: Gewesen. Wie sturmestot die Särge schlummerten, Auf allen Gräbern taute still: Genesen. In the Churchyard Cemetery  The day passed heavy with rain and storm tossed; I have been at many forgotten  graves, weathered stone and cross, the wreaths  old, the names overgrown, hardly to be read  The day passed storm tossed and heavy with rain, On every grave froze the word: Departed. As if dead to the storm the coffins  slumbered, On every grave thawed silently: Healed.  Vergebliches Ständchen  (Er) Guten Abent, mein Schatz, Guten Abend, mein Kind! Ich Komm aus Lieb zu dir, Ach, mach mir auf die Tür!  (Sie) Mein Tür ist verschlossen, Ich laß dich nicht ein; Mutter, die rät mir klug, Wärst du herein mit Fug, Wärs mit mir vorbei! May  Since May in ful flower in the meadows is  calling us,  Come, do not weary of mingling your soul With the countryside, the woods, the charming shadows,  The wide patches of moonlight by the shore of the sleeping billows,  The path that ends where the road begins,  And the air and the spring and the  immense, L’horizon que ce monde attaché humble et joyeux Comme une lèvre au bas de la robe des cieux   immense horizon, The horizon that this world attaches, humble and joyful, Like a lip to the bottom of the sky’s dress.
