Structural studies of plant gums, with particular reference to Sterculia urens gum

Abstract

The gum exudate of Sterculla urens was deacetylated and purified by dissolution in sodium hydroxide solution (or in aqueous ammonia) and precipitation with ethanol acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The purified gum had [<l]d +62 and galaoturonio acid, glucuronic acid, galactose, rhamnose and a trace of arabinose as component sugars. The purified gum was examined for heterogeneity by the various available methods. The results obtained indicated the presence of a homogeneous polymer
