IMIGRANTES SENEGALESES: A PRESENÇA MUÇULMANA NA SERRA GAÚCHA

Abstract

RESUMODesde meados da segunda década do século XX, a Serra Gaúcha recebe imigrantes/migrantes muçulmanos. A partir do século XXI, no entanto, a imigração senegalesa, em especial para Caxias do Sul, vem tornando pública as manifestações religiosas do Islã. Essas, anteriormente restritas ao espaço privado, vêm despertando a atenção da sociedade local, majoritariamente católica. Este estudo analisa a relação deste Islã, migrante da África Central, com a comunidade “tradicional da região”, identificando a recepção e a compreensão do mesmo. Utiliza-se como fontes a imprensa regional e a história oral, de forma a perceber o acolhimento do grupo muçulmano. O Islã é uma religião que ocupa significativo espaço na mídia contemporânea e sua inserção na sociedade brasileira merece atenção dos historiadores da religião. E, ainda, seus praticantes, em seus processos de migração, reelaboram identidades religiosas locais.ABSTRACTSince the mid-second decade of the twentieth century, the Serra Gaucha has received Muslim immigrants and migrants. However, since the twenty-first century, the Senegalese immigration, especially to Caxias do Sul, has made the Islamic religious manifestations public. These, previously restricted to the private space, have been receiving attention of the local society, mainly Catholic. This study analyzes the relationship of this Islam, migrant from Central Africa, with the “traditional” community of the region, identifying its reception and understanding. Regional press and oral history are used as sources, in order to perceive the reception of the Muslim group. Islam is a religion that occupies significant space in the contemporary media and its insertion in the Brazilian society deserves attention of the religion’s historians. And, furthermore, its practitioners, in their migration processes, re-elaborate local religious identities
