Byimproving the techniques of polymer synthesis and modifi-cation, functional polymers facilely achieve excellent bio-compatibility and biodegradability and variable stimuli-responsiveness and bioactivity. Besides, functional polymerscan be processed into various device modalities, such asnanoparticles, nanofibers, microspheres, microfibers, hydro-gels, membranes, and scaffolds, to meet different practicalapplications.Functional polymers have demonstrated promisingapplications in a wide range of biomedical fields, includingdisease diagnosis, therapeutic drug delivery, biosensors, tis-sue engineering, and medical devices. This special issue isaimed at systematically and comprehensively presenting thelatest advances in developing preparation approaches andemerging biomedical applications of functional polymer-based materials, providing guidance and reference for futurestudies.Tomeet this aim, the special issue collected sixteen researcharticles and two review articles. These articles cover the synthe-sis and biomedical applications of functional polymers.Twelve research articles focused on polysaccharides andtheir applications in antitumor, antioxidation, and anti-inflammatory functions. Antitumor activity is a potentialproperty of polysaccharides, and nine different polysaccha-rides have been reported to exhibit antitumor activity againstvarious tumors. M. Zeng et al. investigated the antitumoreffect of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) on humancutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and demonstrated thatLBP induced the apoptosis of human cutaneous squamouscell carcinoma A431 cells by inhibiting autophagy and effec-tively inhibited tumor growth. Y. Zhang et al. confirmed thatCodonopsis pilosula polysaccharide effectively inhibited theproliferation and motility of human hepatoma HepG2 cellsin vitro possibly by inhibiting the β-catenin/TCF4 pathway.Similarly, M. Yao et al. illustrated that Laminaria japonicapolysaccharide inhibited the survival of non-small-cell lungadenocarcinoma A549 cells through the same pathway. X.Du et al. found that Radix hedysari polysaccharide inhibitedthe growth of glioma U251 cells by cell cycle arrest and reg-ulation of the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) signalingpathway. X. Xu et al. demonstrated that sulfated polysaccha-ride from Undaria pinnatifida had antitumor activity againsthuman prostate cancer DU145 cells, and the underlyingmechanism may be related to inhibiting the migration andproliferation of cancer cells and inducing their apoptosis.W. Zhou et al. studied the effects of Polygonatum sibiricumpolysaccharide (PSP) on the human esophageal squamouscell carcinoma Eca109 cells. The results showed that PSP sig-nificantly inhibited the proliferation, invasion, and migrationof Eca109 cells and promoted cell apoptosis, and the under-lying mechanism may be related to the inhibition of thenuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway.HindawiInternational Journal of Polymer ScienceVolume 2021, Article ID 9763105, 2 pageshttps://doi.org/10.1155/2021/9763105Three research articles reported the synergistic antitu-mor efficacy of polysaccharides and other antitumor drugs.X. Liu et al. demonstrated that lentinan enhanced the cyto-toxic effect of cisplatin on tumor cells, and the combinedtreatment of lentinan and cisplatin showed a satisfactorytumor inhibition effect in multiple tumor models. W. Wuet al. combined macrofungal polysaccharide (MFP) andvemurafenib to treat melanoma. The results showed thatMFP significantly enhanced the tumor inhibitory effect ofvemurafenib in human melanoma MeWo cell-bearing mice.X. Yang et al. found that Ganoderma lucidum polysaccha-ride (GLP) improved the antitumor effect of 5-fluorouracilagainst gastric cancer BGC823 and SGC7901 cells by activat-ing the natural killer group 2 member D (NKG2D)/MHCclass I-related chain A (MICA) pathway.Three research articles reported the applications of poly-saccharides for treatment of other diseases, such as contrast-induced nephropathy, osteoarthritis, and intervertebral discdegeneration. M. Dai et al. demonstrated that the crude poly-saccharide (cSFP-C) extracted from Sargassum fusiformeeffectively prevented contrast-induced nephropathy due totheir excellent antioxidant capacity. G. Lu et al. found thathyaluronic acid and Astragalus polysaccharide-capsulednanoparticle effectively treated osteoarthritis by regulatingcytokines and proteinase. Z. Zhai et al. confirmed that Poly-gonatum sibiricum polysaccharide (PSP) effectively reducedthe apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress of nucleuspulposus cells in rat with intervertebral disc degeneration,and it was a potential therapeutic drug for intervertebral discdegeneration.Four original research articles report the synthesis andbiomedical applications of other functional polymers. Q.Chen et al. prepared porous chitosan microsphere loadedwith platelet-rich plasma and bone marrow-derived mesen-chymal stem cells (PCM/PRP/BMSC composite), and theyfound that PCM/PRP/BMSC composite was beneficial forthe repair of tibial defects. D. Patiño-Ruiz et al. synthesizedchitosan-alginate nanodisk (Cs-Al ND) using the ionotropicgelation technique and demonstrated that Cs-Al ND was apromising drug delivery system with high encapsulationefficiency and controlled drug release. D. T. Nguyen et al.investigated the effect of microwave irradiation on poly(vi-nyl alcohol) (PVA) in PVA/Ag+ solution. The results con-firmed that the redox reaction of Ag+ with PVA and Ag+reduced the hydrolysis rate of PVA. A. M. Díaz-Guerreroet al. used a mathematical model to evaluate the acetamin-ophen release in hydroxypropyl cellulose with polyacryl-amide (HPC/PAAm) and confirmed that the proposedmathematical model was reliable.In addition, two review articles summarized the latestadvances in two different functional polymers for biomed-ical applications. G. Merkininkaitė et al. introduced three-dimensional laser lithography (3DLL) and the main cate-gories of polymers used in 3DLL and then discussed theapplications of 3DLL structural polymers in regenerativemedicine. Finally, the current challenges and opportunitiesin this area were highlighted. Y. Yang et al. reviewed thepreparation methods of the cellulose nanocrystal and its wideapplications in various fields, which provided operable ideasand techniques for future high-end and ecofriendly func-tional composites.In summary, this special issue bridges the synthesismethods, structure-property correlations, and biomedicalapplications of functional polymers and explores theirunderlying mechanisms.
